Questions:
Who are George’s family and where did they come from? Found some families that
migrated to Bourbon and on to New Paris (Morrison’s and Purviances) came from
Rowan Co. North Carolina. There is a John “Burnaw” in Onslow County NC , found a
land grant record in the 1770’s. John Gorham (Francies’s Brother) also has
links to being in NC.
Thomas Gorham is known to be an overseer for William Bronaugh Sept 1760 in
Loudon Co VA, but there is no family link from the Brounaugh’s to my George
“Burnau”. However it does seem quite a coincidence that Thomas’s daughter
(Frances) married a similar spelling.
Siblings of Thomas G Burnau not found: John “Bannough” (Burnau), Betsy, or
Susan
Found a George O. Burnau, originally of New Paris OH. Listed Nancy Burnau King
as nearest relative on military records. Lived in Chicago Cook Co before
returning to Ohio . Not sure how related to these Burnau’s.
Is Burnaw’s and \or Bernau\Bernaugh’s related but using a different spelling?
These spellings are also found in Bourbon and \ or Nicholas County . There is a
George BERNAUGH Gorham (b. April 10, 1847 , Paris , Bourbon, Kentucky ; d. May
9, 1879 , Paris , Bourbon, Kentucky ). Elizabeth Bernaugh per obit. was a
native of Bourbon Co KY. She married Thomas Benton Maddox and they moved to
CallawayCountyMO. I found a tree where their son is named George “Bernaugh”
Maddox. Elizabeth Bernaugh’s parents were Bernau, William F. Bernau and
Elizabeth Miller. Besides Elizabeth , other children were: James D “Barnaw”,
Henry (or Harry?), and Lucy E (1860 census).
