Martha -
I live about four miles from the corner of 1100 North and 100 East and yes, there was a
church on that corner, Bethel Church; also a school house. The school house is still
standing. I tried to find the cemetery where Robert McConnell was buried. I have the
obits list for Wells County, but it was not there. While I was searching I came across a
terrific piece about Ossian and read it, since I've lived here for over 60 years.
Are you familiar with the name William Craig? In this article it tells about the Craigs
and here is an excerpt:
William Craig married Margaret, daughter of Robert and Mary A. (Stout) McConnell, natives
of New Jersey, in which state Mrs. Craig was born October 4, 1827. Their marriage occurred
April 11, 1850, at the home of the bride's parents in Jefferson Township. The young
couple began their domestic life on a farm. During his most active life Mr. Craig was a
merchant of Ossian, but subsequently retired with sufficient means to make him
independent. The first election held in the township was at the house of William Craig.
There is more about the Craigs, but I didn't see anything more about the McConnells
except their daughters marriage. There is a mention of Mary Swaim as a school teacher in
about 1900. The article was published in 1918. The Craigs were instrumental in founding
the town of Ossian.
Here is where I found the article:

Hope this gives you a little information.
