SUICIDE'S BODY FOUND BY HIS DAUGHTER
Jacob Card, Member of Bluffton Encampment I. G. O. F., Hanged Himself Friday, Funeral
Sunday At Warren
Coroner Fred McBridge arrived home late Friday from a trip to Jeff, in Jackson township,
where he was called Friday afternoon to investigate the death of Jacob Card, an oil field
employee who committed suicide during the forenoon by hanging himself. The investigation
showed that Card deliberately planned his self destruction. He had been around his home
during the morning and it was afterward remembered he acted somewhat queer. Having made up
his mind to his act of suicide he went to a wagon shed and after securing a rope tied one
end around a support in the loft and placed a noose around his neck. From the position of
the body it is judged that he climbed upon a buggy seat and jumping from it launched
himself into eternity.
The body was found about ten o'clock by the dead man's daughter, Miss Nellie, who
happened to go into the shed and was horrified to behold the form of her father suspended
in mid-air in death. She summoned assistance and the body was cut down immediately, but
when physicians arrived they gave it as their opinion that Card had been dead an hour when
found. Jacob Card was 51 years of age, having been born October 16, 1853, and a wife and
three grown daughters, one of whom is married, are left to mourn his death. The family
live on the Baker farm, one fourth mile south of Jeff. He formerly worked as a farmer,
but left that vocation to work in the oil field. The deceased was a member of the Jackson
Center lodge of Odd Fellows and belonged to the Bluffton Encampment No. 141, I.O.O.F. The
funeral was held under the direction of the lodges. He was well known over the county,
especially in Odd Fellows circles. Card left no explanation behind of his act, but he had
been despo!
ndent over the condition of his health and other troubles and it is supposed that his act
was committed during a temporary spell of mental aberation. One cause said to have led to
Card's suicide was misfortune in the oil business. He lost $1,000 in one of his oil
ventures, and this matter had prayed upon his mind considerably. The funeral was held at
Warren at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon and was attended by members of the Odd Fellows
and others from here.
