Mrs. Lillie Marie Schaefer, 41, virtually a lifelong resident of the county, died at 1
a.m. today at the Wells county hospital following a heart attack. She was removed from the
hospital Sunday morning and taken to her home, two miles south and one-fourth west of
Berne, She suffered the heart attack Sunday afternoon and was returned to the hospital
Monday morning. The heart condition developed following an illness of four weeks.
Born in Wells county Jan. 23, 1902, the decedent was the daughter of Joel and Saloma
Baumgartner Schwartz. Her marriage Mar. 28, 1925 in Decatur was to Joel Schaefer.
Surviving are the father, of Vera Cruz, the husband, three sons, Donald Schwartz, who is
with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific, Glen and Gerald Schwartz, at home; three
daughters, Mildred, Rosella and Mary Jane Schwartz, all at home; five sisters, Mrs. Samuel
Maller and Mrs. Noah Steffen, both of Bluffton, Mrs. Paul Gresley, of Fort Wayne, Mrs.
Edward Gerber and Mrs. Walter Fiechter, both of Craigville, and tow brothers, Lewis
Schwartz of Los Angeles, Calif., and Raymond Schwartz, in service in North Africa. A
sister is deceased.
The body will be taken this evening from the Jahn funeral home to the residence.
Funeral services Will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at he residence and at 2 p.m. at the
Apostolic Christian church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A resident of 419 West Ohio St., Joel Schaefer, 81, died at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday of
respiratory arrest after being admitted to the Clinic Hospital at 11 a.m. that day.
Having been ill the past one and one-half years, he had been hospitalized at intervals
over the past month.
A member of the Apostolic Christian Church, Mr. Schaefer retired 16 years ago from
employment with the Indiana & Michigan Electric Co.
Born April 14, 1896 in Adams County, he was a son of Fred and Anna Miller Schaefer. A
first marriage was to Lillie Schwartz, who died in 1943, and on Aug. 4, 1946 his marriage
to Aldine E. Gilliom, who survives, took place in Bluffton.
Other survivors include three sons, Donald D. of Bellflower, Calif., Glen E. of LaMarida,
Calif., and Rev. Gerald W. of Toledo, O.; three daughters, Mrs. Wilford (Mildred)
Baumgartner and Mrs. Mary Jane Fosnaugh, both of Decatur, and Mrs. Charles (Rosella)
Fravel of Geneva; a sister, Miss Elizabeth Schaefer of Vera Cruz, 17 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren.
Calling will be after 7 p.m. today at Goodwin Memorial Chapel and until 12:30 p.m. Friday,
at which time the body will be taken to the Apostolic Christian Church for services at
1:30 p.m. Rev. Orville Ringger and Rev. Carroll Gerber will officiate and burial will be
in the church cemetery.
