Not to beat up on Bill, but this gives me another chance to rage against findagrave. The
notation, "burial location unknown," is a red flag for me and even though I have
an interest in the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and in cemeteries, I probably would
have let this go.
A quick check of Wells County Cemetery Index suggested he was not listed in any published
cemetery reading. Looking at the death notice in one of the Bluffton newspapers, it
indicated: "...and burial will occur in the Pennvile (sic) cemetery." Now,
there are a few cemeteries around Pennville, even one named Wells Cemetery. But, as
everyone should know, newspaper obituaries can contain mistakes (as well as gravestone
inscriptions and everything else). Findagrave has a systemic problem in that it is a
breeding ground for the propagation of errors. Any one source should be questionable.
Even published cemetery readings (that are transcribed into findagrave) are "riddled
with errors."
I have not walked the cemeteries around Pennville; but if they are like every other one I
know, there are unmarked graves. I would want to check funeral home records, too.
