In the late 1980's my husband and I explored the land at the northeast corner of
the intersection of St. Rd. 3 and SE Willow Rd. We were looking for an old
cemetery that we thought was located there. IF memory serves, I think I saw
this cemetery on an old map. We spent a few hours going over the area carefully
looking for gravestones or their remnants. We found none.
I highly doubt that there were ever graves on the south side of the river below
the Batson Cemetery. The land is very inappropriate for human burial due to its
wetness. As one approaches the back (south end) of the Batson, the land turns
into a large muddy area that receives water from twisting streams. The land
from this area south to the river and across the river is all downhill from the
Batson Cemetery and therefore should also be much too wet for use as cemetery.
A cousin once told me that the area south of the river contained peat bogs. I
have found that there is a Jeff (peat) bog somewhere in the vicintity, but I
have not been able to locate it.

I'm sure you will get more than one reply. this is what I know of the Batson
Cemetery. at one time part of the cemetery was located on the hill just
north of the river on the east side of St Rd 3 although there is no
evidence to prove this, only the news paper report. The graves were moved to
the Batson Cem. south of Jeff cemetery down the road to the east (which is
probably the one you visited.) Some high school students from Southern Well
told me that there were graves on the south side of the river but I never
found them.
The Wright and the Tomlinson cemetery are one in the same. which is located
about 1-2 miles south of Batson Cem. these two cemeteries are often confused
because of their locations. Did you check the Cemetery list at the Wells
Co. Public library for you person?
The Old Salem Church and Cem is south of Jeff rd. on 1000 S that could be
what you are looking for.

See below a note on the Wells Co., IN library web site, quoting the
September 15, 1937 Centennial edition of the Bluffton News-Banner. Mention
is made of graves in the Batson Cemetery on the "south side" of the river,
including that of my ggggf, Birkett Elkins, early settler and long-time
resident of Jackson Twp. But a recent visit to the Batson Cemetery and a
careful inspection of satellite images of the area shows no traces of graves
on the south side of the Salamonie River. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Were there graves also on the south side of the river? Where, exactly, were
they? An hours-long search of the cemetery on the north side of the river
revealed no gravestones corresponding to those said to be buried on the
south side. William Tomlinson is mentioned, but he seems not to be in the
Wright Cemetery, on Jeff Road, which some sources identify with the
Tomlinsin Cemetery. Was there once another cemetery in this vicinity?
Thanks, Don Howard (don_a_howard(a)comcast.net)
"Batson Cemetery
Location: In Jackson Township turn east on Willow road off of State Road 3
and travel about ½ mile. The cemetery is on the southwest side of the road.
(Willow road runs along on the north side of the Salamonie River.)
The original introduction states "The Batson Cemetery site is located on
land once owned by Henry Batson. In the early 1920's the land was donated to
the cemetery association by Mrs. William Metz, daughter of Henry. The
earliest burial found was an infant child Clara A. Bhart in 1782. Data was
submitted by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hooker, members of the Wells County
Historical Society."
The earliest settler in Jackson township was Jacob Minnich in 1834
(according to the Evening News-Banner Centennial edition). There are no
Bharts listed in the 1807 Indiana Territory Census or the 1820, 1830 and
1840 Indiana censuses.
The Evening New-Banner centennial edition states in the Jackson Township
history "Early Settler Listed. Nathaniel Batson, John Jones, and Daniel
Jones arrived in 1836 and located near the present site of Batson bridge on
State Road 3 . . .In the latter part of 1836 and during 1837-38 . . .On the

C. Brubaker walked this cemetery during the summer of 2000. We were unable
to find any cemetery records or a plot map."
