Hello Mike,
We have Peter Hammer b. 24 Jan 1824 d. 17 May 1862 and Mary (Chandler) Hammer b. 15 Dec
1826 d. 28 Feb 1860 buried in the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery in Montpelier, Blackford
County, Indiana. (1836 to present) If you are not from this area, Blackford and Wells
counties are neighbors. These are most likely the same folks in your query.
If my research indicating Mary's maiden name was Chandler is accurate, I will also
share with you that there are 27 known burials for 'Chandler' in this cemetery.
The three Hammers within this communication are the only Hammer burials known at this
time.
The Hammer's are buried in the Original Plat, Lot 78. Your bonus information is a
Hammer child you might not have known about; he is buried with Peter and Mary. His name
was John W Hammer d. 05 Apr 1865 age 3y 3m 8d.
I checked the photos on file for that section of the cemetery: Peter and Mary have a very
nice grave marker, easy to read. It appears to have been replaced at some time. It is
large, gray in color with "HAMMER" boldly displayed at the top. Their marker
also has the inscriptions "Mother" and "Father".
Little John's marker is most likely the original as it has the look of grave markers
from that period. It has a lamb carving inset at the top. John's is a little rough
to read, but I believe the information is accurate.
I am a member of the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery Board of Directors. The cemetery was
walked in 2002 by the Francois Godfroy Chapter of D.A.R. in Montpelier, Indiana. The DAR
recording was turned over to the board. I cross referenced their information with
available old cemetery records. Photographing all grave markers is a work in progress.
One of the projects on the Board's agenda is cemetery restoration. I believe this
started in 2007-08; it is an ongoing project. The Original Plat (where the Hammer's
are laid to rest) was the starting point for this project. Before and after restoration
has been impressive.
If I can be of further assistance, I am glad to share.
