Indiana Pioneer Cemetery Restoration Project. Part of this project
involves
petitioning the Indiana General Assembly. I have seen the state of some of
these
cemeteries make me very sad, but it disturbs me to think that someday
someone might be permitted to turn it into a corn field or plunk a parking
lot on it.
If any one is at all concerned, please click on the URL below, print out
and sign the petition. I thought this project was relevant to us all as
Hoosier
genealogist and might interest some of you. An edited portion of the
email
I received is below. Please note that to date there have been no signatures
from Wells County or Blackford Co. Perhaps thats partially my fault for not
informing you about the project earlier.
"The Indiana Pioneer Cemetery Restoration Project (INPCRP) petitions
urging the Indiana General Assembly to act decisively to protect our
vanishing pioneer cemeteries are still streaming in. I want to thank all
of you who have taken the time to print out the Petition from the INPCRP
website at >http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp.
>Thought you might be interested in a current tally of the
number of
>signatures received so far. The total as of Tuesday evening, Jan. 5,
1999, is 426, including 36 out-of-state signatures. The rest are from
Indiana residents.
>The deadline for collecting and mailing in petition
signatures has
been extended due to the inclement weather this week in Indianapolis,
which has delayed the start of the 1999 Legislative Session.
We received word today that we should hear from our legislative
contact next week concerning an date and time for us to meet them to
discuss our concerns. I'll keep you posted as that situation develops.
>Thanks for caring about protecting Indiana's abandoned
and neglected
pioneer cemeteries."
