This is in reference to piece printed in the Hoosier Genealogist, v23 #4,
December 1983.
It lists names extracted from the "Circuit Court Final Oath Book." It
says the names were extracted inadvertantly by the WPA in the 1940s. The
source material were NOT the court order books, so they didn't include the
information in the "Index to Indiana Naturalization Records."
It says, "The original list is in the Indiana State Archives, the original
papers presumably are still in Wells County."
The State Archives do not have the "Circuit Court Final Oath Book."
Likewise, the County Clerk's office has no knowledge of it (or other
naturalization records for the listed persons).
Has anyone encountered this list before? Does anyone know where the
records might be found?
Three brothers (John, Ulrich, and Peter Gerber were listed consecutively
on this list.
They were Swiss immigrants (as children) who arrived at New York in May
1851. Their father filed his citizenship application in 1853 (which
appears in the Wells County Court Order Books) and died
before 1856.
John Gerber (1832-1920)
Ulrich Gerber (1835-1906)
Peter Gerber (1836-1916)
Peter, the youngest, would have come of age (21) in 1857, so these
naturalization records would have to be after that.
If anyone would like a lookup from this list, I can provide that.
Please reply to the list if you know the whereabouts of the original
records.
Have a good day!
