Subject: IHS Sponsors Genealogy Computer Workshops
Recording family history and conducting research using a computer will be
the focus of Family History Computer Workshops presented by Larry Goss of
the University of Southern Indiana and sponsored by the Indiana Historical
Society on 4 December 1999 and 26 February 2000 in the IHS Theater, 450 W.
Ohio St., Indianapolis.
The morning workshop on 4 December is designed for genealogists who would
like to use their computers to maintain family history records. The workshop
will focus on fundamental computer record keeping, organizing family history
research notes, where to look, whom to see, and what to ask. That same day
the afternoon workshop will feature a demonstration of family history
computer software, including "Family Tree Maker," "Family Origins,"
"Brothers Keeper," and "Ultimate Family Tree."
The series will conclude with morning and afternoon workshops on 26
February. The morning intermediate workshop will include information on
accessing the Internet, sources available on the Internet, searching the
Internet, and separating fact from fiction. The afternoon advanced workshop
will cover digital imaging and downloading files from the Internet. How to
process digital images and the hardware and software required to process
digital images will also be discussed.
Goss, director of USI's industrial management program, has worked with
computers throughout his career. He has been keeping genealogical
information on personal computers since 1983. A charter member of the
Tri-State Genealogical Society of Evansville, Goss writes a column on
computerized genealogy for the group's quarterly newsletter.
Preregistration is recommended as seating is limited. The registration
deadlines are 19 November 1999 for the 4 December workshops and 11 February
2000 for the 26 February 2000 workshops. Registration forms are available by
