Maxine D. Surfus, 84
Mother of Warren resident Mrs. Ron (Bonnie) Boxell and a former Warren resident, Maxine D.
Surfus, 84, of Warsaw, died at 10:28 p.m. Saturday at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort
Wayne.
Born in Huntington County June 5, 1921 to Walter F. and Loretta Caley Campbell, she
married William Doyle Surfus in Winchester Dec. 13, 1939. He preceded her in death Oct.
20, 1992.
A homemaker and a member of the Manchester Moose Lodge, Mrs. Surfus and her husband moved
from Warren to Warsaw in 1967. She was a member of the Hillcrest Church of the Nazarene in
Warren.
Additional survivors include a second daughter, Mrs. Jack (Barbara) Watson of Liberty
Mills; two brothers, Harold Campbell and LaVon Clevenger, both of Warren; six sisters,
Mrs. Robert (Idella) Gard and Marcella Davis, both of Warren, Mrs. Ben (Opal) Stewart,
Fort Wayne, Patricia Wolf, Huntington, Wynette Sands, Angola and Becky Mays, Fort Wayne;
12 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; 10
step-great-grandchildren and 11 step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sons Bill, David and Denny Surfus, brothers James and Walter
Campbell, sister Evelyn Coppock, grandson Kent Boxell and great-grandson Alec Evans.
Services at 10 a.m. Wednesday will be at Glancy Funeral Homes-H. Brown & Son Chapel in
Warren with Pastor Bill Keen and Rev. Ed French officiating. Burial will follow in the
Gardens of Memory in Marion.
Calling at the funeral home is today from 2 to 8 p.m.

Charles ‘Woody’ Crum, 86 -- Pending
Arrangements are pending at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Homes, Ossian, for Charles
“Woody” Crum, 86, of Warren, formerly of Bluffton and Uniondale who died Tuesday, Aug. 23
at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Tyson Graham Bennett -- Infant
Tyson Graham Bennett, infant son of Graham Scott and Mariah Myers Bennett of Indianapolis,
died at 12:33 p.m. Sunday, August 21, 2005, the date of his birth, at Clarion West Medical
Center in Avon.
Surviving, in addition to the parents, are grandparents, Richard Myers of Rochester Hills,
Michigan; Penny Wall Myers of Indianapolis, Robert Bennett of Anderson and RoseMarie
Russell of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska.
Great-grandparents Bill and Ruth Wall and Frank and Rosalea Myers are deceased.
There will be no visitation prior to the service at the cemetery. Graveside services will
be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brookside Cemetery, Montpelier, with Rev. Michael Lawson
officiating. Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles ‘Woody’ Crum, 86
A former resident of Bluffton and Uniondale, Charles “Woody” Crum, 86, died Tuesday, Aug.
23, 2005, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. He was a resident of the United Methodist
Memorial Home at Warren.
Mr. Crum retired from the K-Mart Warehouse in 1982 with 27 years of service. He also had
been a licensed embalmer for 10 years at a funeral home in Muncie.
In earlier years, Mr. Crum was an accomplished whistler and vocalist, and entertained at
various functions. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bluffton.
Mr. Crum was born Dec. 1, 1918, in Wells County to Charles and Laura Schwartz Crum, and he
graduated in 1937 from Rockcreek High School. He was married July 9, 1995, in Bluffton to
Florence A. Furnas Irey, who survives.
Other survivors include four stepdaughters, Mrs. Stephen (Margaret) Cullison of Warsaw,
and Susan Reno, Mrs. Robert (Melinda) Franz, and Mrs. William (Julia) Pittenger, all of
Muncie; a sister-in-law, Maxine Crum of Ossian; two nieces, Linda Smith of Ossian and Rita
Rathburn of Pleasant Lake; five stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ardis B. Crum, and a niece.
Calling will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home in Ossian.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Cindy Osgood
officiating. Burial will be in the Horeb Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the United Methodist Memorial Home or to Adams-Wells Special
Services.
Harold D. Hendricks, 75
Harold D. Hendricks, 75, of Geneva died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at Adams County Memorial
Hospital in Decatur.
He had worked at International Harvester and Navistar and also was a carpenter. He had
been an usher and head of the trustees at High Street United Methodist Church in Geneva.
Born June 1, 1930, in Geneva to John and Verna Biberstein Hendricks, he was married July
23, 1950, in Geneva to Marie Nevil, who survives. He attended Geneva High School.
Other survivors include two daughters, Arlyn Hendricks and Mrs. Tony (Linda) Oswalt, both
of Geneva; four sisters, Mrs. Jewel (Betty) Duke and Mrs. Larry (Gloria) Spieth, both of
Fort Wayne, Mrs. Jerome (Sharilyn) Kleinrichert of Lake Worth, Fla., and Patricia Terrell
of Phoenix, Ariz.; three brothers, Bob of Marion, Melvin of Bullhead City, Ariz., and
Harvey of Cut Off, La.; a granddaughter; three grandsons, including Joshua Oswalt of
Bluffton; and a great-granddaughter.
Calling is from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Downing and Glancy Funeral Home in Geneva.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. James Bontrager
officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery at Geneva.
Preferred memorials are to the High Street United Methodist Church in Geneva.

Mabel M. Reppert, 92
Mabel M. Reppert, 92, of Decatur died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Ossian Health and
Rehabilitation Center.
She worked 17 years as a bookkeeper in Ossian for Hunter’s Garage. She also worked for
Murphy’s 5 & 10 and for Grand Leader in Fort Wayne.
She was born Nov. 25, 1912, in Allen County to Lewis Earl and Lucy Adams McBride. Her
marriage on Sept. 17, 1932, in Adams County was to Paul E. Reppert, who preceded her in
death on Jan. 21, 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Wilma Jean) Grote of Decatur; a daughter-in-law,
Kathryn Sue Reppert of Ossian; a sister, Helen Shurtz of Coldwater, Mich.; five
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Paul Richard and Jackie Lee Reppert; three sisters;
a brother; and a grandson.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home,
Ossian.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Robert D. DeBolt
officiating.
Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to Ossian Health Care or New Hope Hospice.
Forace Hale Brewer, 79
Forace Hale Brewer, 79, of Bluffton died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Lutheran Hospital in
Fort Wayne.
Mr. Brewer retired as a conductor with 23 years of service with the Pennsylvania, Conrail,
Penn Central and Amtrak railroads. He also was a farmer in Wells County for 20 years. He
owned Better Built Trailers and also raised Dalmatian and American Eskimo dogs.
He was born May 12, 1926, in Garrett to Forace Mahlon and Jennie E. March Brewer. His
marriage Aug. 16, 1958, in Bluffton was to E. Joan Archbold, who survives.
Mr. Brewer was a 1945 graduate of Bluffton High School. He was a member of the First
Church of Christ.
Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John (Kayleen J.) Reusser of Bluffton, and
Mrs. Eli (Lynette E.) Johnson and Mrs. Ron (Camille E.) Havens, both of Fort Wayne; seven
sisters, Mrs. Luana Stanley and Mrs. Charles (Jean) Holmes, both of Fort Wayne, Mrs.
Robert (Ines) Gillespie of Wabash, Venita Messinger of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Dale
(Lorene) Oswalt of Fairfield Glade, Tenn., Mrs. Kenneth (Hertha) Kruckeberg of Moro, Ill.,
and Mrs. John (Jennie) Kralicek of Bryan, Ohio; two brothers, Max of Florida and Ray of
Muncie; and four grandchildren.
Calling is from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Goodwin Memorial Chapel.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First Church of Christ with Rev. Larry Sprinkle
officiating. Calling will also be one hour prior to services at the church.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton.
Preferred memorials are to the First Church of Christ Building Fund.

Clarence W. Bartlett, 78
Owner and operator of Bartlett Novelty & Manufacturing in Pennville for many years and
also a farmer in Jay County, Clarence W. Bartlett, 78, of Pennville died at 2:12 a.m.
Saturday, August 27, 2005, at his residence.
An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the Pennville American Legion Post
and the National Rifleman’s Association.
Born Sept. 9, 1926, in Delaware County, he was the son of Joseph and Virgil Bolander
Bartlett. He attended Eaton and Albany schools. His marriage was on Jan. 19, 1951 at
Hartford City to Catherine Stueckler, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Robert V. Bartlett of West Lafayette, John R. Bartlett of
Keystone and Michael E. Bartlett of Pennville; one daughter, Mrs. Jay (Marie L.) Holloway
of Hartford City; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel, Montpelier, is in charge of arrangements, which are
for private family services.
Florence ‘Bonnie’ Vonderhuevel, 58
A crafts-maker displaying and demonstrating for many years at Wheels of Yesteryear in
Wells County and other area festivals, Florence “Bonnie” Yvonne Vonderhuevel, 58, of
DeGraff, Ohio, died at 6:51 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at the Ohio State University
Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio.
A homemaker, decorative artist and owner of Classy Country Crafts, she was a member of the
DeGraff United Methodist Church and eight county steam and gas clubs. She was the 1996
Logan County Pomona Granger of the year and was a past Ohio State Grange membership
director. She was a graduate of Cory-Rawson High School.
Born January 28, 1947, in Dayton, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Robert Richeson and
Thelma Zora Lout Nunn. Her marriage was on Feb. 28, 1984, in DeGraff to Neil Vonderhuevel,
who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Dean Klingler of Pandora, Ohio, and Don and Steven
Klingler, both of DeGraff; four stepsons, Danny Vonderhuevel of Botkins, Ohio, and Mark,
Matt and Keith Vonderhuevel, all three of Sidney, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Boyd (Janet)
Dawson of Spring City, Tenn. and Mrs. Richard (Shirley) Yates of Lake City, Fla.; eight
grandchildren, one great-grandchild, 18 step-grandchildren and one great-step-grandchild.
Visitation was Sunday and continues today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. (Ohio time) at
Rexer-Riggen-Madden Funeral Home in DeGraff, and for one hour prior to 11 a.m. (Ohio time)
Tuesday funeral services at the DeGraff United Methodist Church with Rev. Julia Ronngren
officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff. Memorials to DeGraff
United Methodist Church and Lifeline of Ohio.

Berniece Maller, 89
Berniece V. Maller, 89, rural Bluffton, died at 12:20 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29 at her home.
Born in Wells County on Oct. 4, 1915 to Albert and Aldine Aschliman Heyerly, she married
Melvin M. Maller on Nov. 5, 1939 in Bluffton; he survives. A member of the Apostolic
Christian Church, she was a homemaker and also worked at Heyerly’s Bakery for eight
years.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Doyle (Janice) Reinhard and Carol Maller, both
of Bluffton; two brothers, Luster Heyerly and Simon “Pete” Heyerly, both of Bluffton; four
sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Gladys) Gerber, Mrs. Jeanette Tonner, Rosella Heyerly and Dula
Heyerly, all of Bluffton; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church East.
Calling will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from noon until 8 p.m. at Goodwin
Memorial Chapel in Bluffton, and for one hour prior to the service Thursday at the
church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Christian Care
Retirement Community.
Joyce Brooks, 57
The sister of Mrs. Gary (Barbara) Grubb of Bluffton, Joyce K. Brooks, 57, Roanoke, died
Sunday, Aug. 28.
Born in Argos on Sept. 7, 1947 to Kelly and Mollie Rowe Morgan, she retired after 27 years
at Central Soya and attended the First Presbyterian Church in Ossian.
Survivors include her husband, Vernon Brooks, Jr.; two sons, Cliff Myrice of Decatur and
Tim Myrice of Huntington; three sisters, Hazel Brunner, Decatur, Georgia York of Monroe,
Mich. and Mrs. Grubb of Bluffton; a brother, Ricky Wheeler of Toledo, Ohio; and eight
grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home,
Winchester Rd. Chapel. Rev. Lyle Ewing will officiate. Calling hours are Wednesday from 2
to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service Thursday.
Preferred memorials are to the church.
Jennie Kathryn Bricker, 96 — Rites Pending
Jennie Kathryn (Roberts) Bricker, 96, died this morning, Aug. 30, at River Terrace
Estates. Rites are pending at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel.
