BLUFFTON CHRONICLE, October 31, 1906
PETER BRICKLEY WELL KNOWN FARMER DIES
EX-WELLS COUNTY COMMISSIONER PASSES AWAY AFTER TEN DAYS SICKNESS DUE TO PARALYSIS
Ex-county commissioner Peter Brickley passed away at four o'clock Friday
afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Covault, north of Murray, after a sickness
of ten days. He was stricken with paralysis on the evening of Tuesday, October 16, and
from that time until his death he was entirely helpless, part of the time unconscious and
unable to talk and able to take only meagre nourishment.
Peter Brickley was one of the oldest settlers of Wells County and his residence of
over half a century covered the most important period in the history of the county and the
state. He was a native of Ohio, a son of George and Belinda Brickley, both parents being
born in Pennsylvania, but moving in an early day to Ohio, where they lived a few years
before selling their possessions and moving to Wells county, Indiana, locating in
Rockcreek township on what is now one of the best farms in that section of the county.
His father later moved to a farm a short distance south of Markle, where he lived until
his death.
Of eleven children born to George and Belinda Brickley, Peter was the second in order
and was born in Lordstown, Ohio, August 1, 1832, being past seventy four years of age at
his death. He was reared in his native state, receiving such educational advantages as
were offered by subscription schools. In 1851, he came to Wells County with his parents.
He was married to Mary Ann Smith of Rock Creek township, a sister of senator J. H. C.
Smith of this city. At that time he was given a sixty acre farm by his father, which he
afterwards sold and with the proceeds purchased a farm in Lancaster township to which he
added more land at intervals as he prospered, increasing his holdings until he had
acquired real estate which amounted at one time to 375 acres. He was one of the
county's most successful and progressive agriculturalists, engaging in the buying and
shipping of live stock.
After acquiring sufficiency of this world's goods to make him independent Mr.
Brickley, in 1894, left the farm and moved to Bluffton. In the year 1900 he suffered a sad
bereavement in the death of his faithful and devoted wife. After her death he made his
home with his children for a few years. He was married a second time, two years ago, to
Mrs. Mary Woodward, but this union proved to be an unhappy one, and they lived together
for only a short time. He again made his home with his children until a few months ago
when on account of his enfeebled condition, apartments were secured at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Covault and they were employed to look after his care.
In Mr. Brickley's first marriage were born eleven children, of whom nine are
living. They are Elzey, James, John and Frank Brickley, Mrs. D. O. North, Mrs. Bertha
Wesley of Roann, Mrs Kate Gardiner of Herman, Calif., Mrs. J. S. DeLong, and Miss Artha
Brickley.
In addition to the nine children left to mourn Mr. Brickley's death, two brothers
and sisters. They are Alfred and Lewis Brickley, Mrs. Nancy Jane Ogden and Mrs. Haman
Allen, living near Markle. All of the brothers and sisters and all but two of the
children will be here for the funeral on Sunday. One son, Frank, employed as a railroad
operator at Cornish, Utah, and Mrs. Gardiner, who is in California, will be unable to
attend.
(FOOTNOTE) Mr. Brickley is the second child born to George and Belinda Wolfcale Brickley.
Their eldest child was Mary Brickley who married Abraham Woodward. The second wife Mary
Woodward could have been the wife of Leonard Woodward b. 1826 and older brother of Abraham
Woodward.
Also, the Kate Gardiner is probably part of the same Gardiner family as one of my
aunts, Mary Alverda Beaty Gardiner and the Mrs. Haman Allen is probably a sister in law of
Mrs. Sherman Allen ie. Hannah Beaty my ggaunt.
I have considerable knowedge of Brickley, Wolfcale and Woodward families in Pa., Va., Oh.,
and In.
