Beth;
Jacob Shoup, with the Wells County IN. Bio, was the son of John & Mary Magdaline
'Polly' Ackermann Shoup. John was the son of an older Jacob Shoup, who was born
circa 1744 in Germany and emigrated to PA.
Jacob's parents John & Polly are interred at Zanesville Cem.

I believe these Shoup's to be the 'Large Barn builders' of the PA Dutch. A
family of Shoup's moved across PA building extraordinary large barns for
swiss/germanic (mostly) clients. These barns were bigger than the normal large red barns.
They moved when the native timbers and/or the demand was exhausted. An article traced them
through several PA counties (sorry I don't remember which ones), but I additionally
placed them building a few barns in Wayne County, Ohio. There was what probably had been
their work on 100W or 200 W in Wells County, Indiana and very near the 8-mile creek a
masterpiece. It disappeared about ten years ago before I could get a picture. I sent, at
that time, a packet of the article, maps I made, and pictures of the Wayne County OH barns
to a man who claimed to be traveling America photographing these relics for a book. He was
to send me a free copy but it was never received. I don't remember how he found me, I
probably replied to a posting of his. I'll t!
ry and see if I kept a copy of any info, but in one of the PA County Histories there is
an article about these Shoup's. Try Westmoreland County, first.
The Shoup men were very muscular and it seems 7 out of ten children tended to be males.
They aren't related I just thought it was a neat way this family left their mark, and
could be traced through their work.
Good luck
Tom McGinnis.
