Dr. J. Patrick Cripe, 58
A physician at Bluffton Regional Medical Center and Caylor-Nickel Clinic in Ossian, Dr. J.
Patrick Cripe, 58, of Ossian, died Thursday, July 22 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Dr. Cripe came to Ossian as a family practitioner in 1979. He was board certified on the
American Board of Family Practice and also board certified in geriatric medicine. He was a
Caylor-Nickel Clinic medical director and a medical director for the continuing care unit
since 1991.
Dr. Cripe received his undergraduate degree from Hanover College in 1968 and his medical
degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1972. He served a rotating
internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis from 1972 to 1973 and remained there
until 1979, when he came to Wells County.
Dr. Cripe, who enjoyed spending happy times at the lake with his family and traveling with
his wife and friends, was born in Bremen on June 25, 1946.
He is survived by his wife, the former Linda Stine, his mother, Mary Gail Cripe of
Decatur; two sons, Steven E. Cripe of Indianapolis and John L. Cripe of Asheville, N.C.;
two stepsons, Matthew R. Middleton and Joshua L. Middleton, and a stepdaughter, Brianna
Middleton, all of Ossian; a brother, Michael J. Cripe of Austin, Tex., and four step
grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home
in Ossian. The family will receive friends and family at the funeral home Monday from 2 to
8 p.m.
Paul R. Carnes, 76
A third generation Wells County farmer, Paul R. Carnes, 76, of rural Poneto, died at 6
p.m. Thursday, July 22 at Lutheran Hospital.
In addition to farming in Wells County, Mr. Carnes raised draft horses. He was a 1945
graduate of Chrester Center High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean
War.
Born Dec. 11, 1927 in Wells County to William Eldon and Catherine Starr Carnes, his
marriage on Dec. 25, 1954 at the Blanche Chapel Church was to the former Carol J.
Zimmerman, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Keith (Carlene) Schierling of Niles, Mich.; Mrs.
Kevin (Cathe) Music of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Stacey (Elaine) Wilson of Uniondale; a sister,
Mrs. Dan (Helen) Sommer of Poneto; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald James Carnes.
Calling will be at Glancy Funeral Homes H. Brown & Son Chapel in Warren on Sunday from
2 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Church of the Nazarene in
Bluffton with Pastor Larry Sheets officiating and burial in Stahl Cemetery.
Calling will also be at the church for one-half hour prior to services.
Preferred memorials are to Family Hospice of Northest Indiana.

Mack E. Buckland, 71
Mack E. Buckland, 71, of Jackson Township, died at11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 24 at Lutheran
Hospital in Fort Wayne.
A Wells County native and lifelong resident, he was born on July 15, 1933 to Howard W. and
Iva Glascock Buckland. He married Judith Pulley on Nov. 5, 1976 in Wells County; she
survives. He attended Jackson Center High School and worked at Franklin Electric, retiring
in 1988. He was also a farmer and a former 4-H leader.
Other survivors include two sons, William Buckland of Huntington and Barry Buckland of
Warren; three daughters, Kim Cassiday of Liberty Center, Karen Herman of Ossian and Kathy
Neuenschwander of Bluffton; two step sons, Gregory Johnson of Hot Springs, Ark. and Aaron
Johnson of Warren; a step daughter, Pam Morris of Poneto; three sisters, Katherine Slater
of Warren, Donna Black of Marion and Kay Randall of Indianapolis; 15 grandchildren; nine
step grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Ogan, Bonnie Boxell and Betty Searles;
and a brother, Roger Buckland.
Calling hours are Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son
Chapel in Warren. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial in
Asbury Cemetery in Montpelier. Preferred memorials to the Wells County 4-H Livestock
Barn.
Kenneth A. Cloud, 72
Kenneth A. Cloud, 72, of Warren, died at 10:34 a.m. Saturday, July 24 at Marion General
Hospital.
Born in Huntington on January 26, 1932 to Arthur and Belle Gaiser Cloud, he married Linda
R. Laymon on June 1, 1952 in Warren; she survives.
A 1950 graduate of Warren High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean
War. He was owner-operator of Cloud Floor Covering in Warren for 18 years, and was also a
service manager in floor covering in Mesa, Ariz. for 18 years. The past seven years he
installed carpeting locally. He was a member of the Warren United Methodist Church.
Other survivors include four sons, Michael A. of Chesterton, Jeffry L. of Brighton, Colo.,
Phillip J. of Mesa, Ariz., and Bradley K. Cloud of Hillsboro, Ore.; a brother, Cloid Cloud
of Warren; a sister, Maxine Boyer of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Warren United Methodist Church with Rev.
Michael Malone, Pastor Michael Cloud and Rev. Clyde Gunn officiating. Calling hours are
this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Glancy Funeral Home, H. Brown & Son Chapel in
Warren and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in
Woodlawn Cemetery in Warren.
Preferred memorials to the Warren United Methodist Church or the New Life Wesleyan Church
in Chesterton.
William J. O’Banion, 68
William J. O’Banion, 68, of Muncie, died at 12:35 a.m. Saturday, July 24 at Ball Memorial
Hospital in Muncie.
Born in Grant County on May 22, 1936, he retired in 1991 from Meadowgold/Best Ever in
Muncie. He was a member of Teamsters Local 135 and attended the Buck Creek Church of the
Brethren in Muncie.
He is survived by his mother, M. Lucille (Clark) O’Banion of Warren; a daughter, Dawn
Elder of Muncie; a step son, Dion McGaughy of Muncie; three sisters, Janice Ramp of
Warren, Janet Daugherty of West Lafayette and Mary Ann Zoda of Van Buren; two brothers,
Patrick O’Banion of Huntington and Thomas O’Banion of Jonesboro; and two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his father, Chester E. O’Banion; and two brothers, Edwin and
James O’Banion.
Services were held today at the Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel in Warren.
Burial was in Van Buren Cemetery. Preferred memorials to the family.

Ethel B. Reif, 99
A resident of the Warren United Methodist Memorial Home since 1978, Ethel B. Reif, 99,
died at the home Monday, July 26, at 2:15 p.m.
Born Feb. 27, 1905 in Douglas, Mich., to Robert and Winnie Baker Dempster, her first
marriage was to Richard Boyce, who preceded her in death. Her second marriage was to
George J. Reif, who died Feb. 16, 1973.
A homemaker most of her life, she also operated two restaurants in Silver Springs, Fla.
She was a member of the Mt. Dora First United Methodist Church in Mt. Dora, Fla., where
she was an honorary member of the church board. She was currently a member of the
Applegate Chapel, Warren.
Survivors include her son, Richard Boyce, of Ocala, Fla., seven step-grandchildren and 30
step-great grandchildren.
Services at 2 p.m. Thursday will be at the United Methodist Memorial Home with Rev. John
Pattison officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Warren.
Calling hours will be one hour prior to services Thursday at the home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Glancy Funeral Homes-H. Brown & Son Chapel.

Mary L. Dowty, 83
A former Ossian resident and sister of Dorothy Patten of Ossian, Mary L. Dowty, 83, of
Acworth, Georgia, died last Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta,
Georgia.
She was born June 22,1921, in Allen County, a daughter of Alfred and Edith Counselor
Johnson. Her marriage was on April 12, 1941, at Lima,Ohio, to Wendell F. Dowty, who
preceded her in death on April 16, 1994.
She was a former employee of Fort Wayne General Electric and was retired from Amoco Oil
where she was a lab supervisor. She was formerly a member of the Ossian United Methodist
Church and a past member of the Ossian Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving, in addition to the Ossian sister, are two sons, Ronald L. Dowty of Leo and
Jerry W. Dowty of Acworth, Georgia; another sister, Norma Snyder of Fort Wayne; four
brothers, Robert Johnson of Hamilton, Ind., and Carl, Raymond and Merle Johnson, all of
Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Arlon Johnson, is
deceased.
Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak
Funeral Home in Ossian, where services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in
Oak Lawn Cemetery at Ossian.

Doris E. Paxson-Traughber, 84
A registered nurse at Caylor-Nickel Clinic for 30 years, Doris E. Paxson-Traughber, 84, of
Bluffton, died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 29 at Christian Care Retirement Community.
Born May 5, 1020 in Ellesmere Port, England to Jack and Margaret Victoria Baker Nixon, she
had resided in Indiana since 1947. Her marriage in Fort Wayne in 1979 was to John
Traughber, who preceded her in death in 1980.
She graduated from nursing school in England in 1943 and served as an R.N. at
Caylor-Nickel Clinic for 30 years, retiring in 1985. After retirement she volunteered
several hours a week at the clinic for more than 10 years. She was a member of the English
Club and an avid swimmer and pool player.
She was a former Senior Olympic winner and was a recipient of the Tri-County Senior
Fitness Award.
She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Bluffton and American Legion Post 111
Auxiliary.
Surviving are a daughter, Debra Hummer of Marion and a son, Kevin E. Paxson of Berne; five
grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and a
brother.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney
Funeral Home with calling two hours prior to services. Rev. Scott Meier will officiate at
services. The body will be cremated.
Preferred memorials are to Calvary Lutheran Church.
Infant Ryan S. Schwartz
Two-day-old infant Ryan Schwartz, son of Enos B. and Susan J. Schwartz, rural Geneva, died
Wednesday, July 28, at the emergency room of Bluffton Regional medical center.
He is survived by three brothers, Matthew, Enos and Steven; five sisters, Laura, Barbara,
Susan, Elsie and Lily; maternal grandparents Menno and Barbara Schwartz and paternal
grandmother Bertha Schwartz, all of Geneva; and a maternal great-grandmother, Dena Eicher
of Walhonding, Ohio.
Calling at the family residence was held today with the funeral scheduled for 3 p.m.
Bishop Dave Wengerd officiated and burial followed in the Bunker Hill Cemetery in Adams
County.
Arrangements are in charge of Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, geneva.
Geraldine L. Baker, 72
Mother of Phil Baker of Ossian, Geraldine L. Baker, 72, died at her residence in Fort
Wayne Monday, July 26.
Born Jan. 23, 1932 to Roy and Agnes Genth, she was married to Carl Baker who preceded her
in death.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to the son in Ossian, she is survived by her mother, who lives in New Haven;
two other sons, Tim and Chad, both of Fort Wayne; a sister Marilyn Gebert of New Haven;
three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jim Baker, and a brother, Gary Genth.
Calling from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday will be at the Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for
Funerals, Waynedale, with a memorial service scheduled to follow at 1 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home or Donor’s Circle.
Ivan D. Fox, 77
Brother of Mrs. Dale (Deloris) Harvey of Bluffton, Ivan D. Fox, 77, Geneva, died at 6:50
p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Chalet Village Health Care Center in Berne.
Born in Adams County April 2, 1927 to Milo and Mary Edith Hirschy Fuchs, he was a retired
Jay County farmer and lived most of his life in Jay and Adams counties.
In addition to the Bluffton sister, survivors include two sons, Ted, of St. Marys, Ohio,
and Roger of Portland; a daughter, Mrs. George (Nona) Boice of Bryant; two brothers,
Herman Fox of Fort Wayne and Delbert Fuchs of Monroe; 14 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren.
A twin sister, Irene Burkholder, and a grandson preceded him in death.
Calling at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home in Geneva will be held today from 3-5 p.m.
and 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Rev.
Paul VanCise will officiate and burial will be in the M.R.E. Cemetery west of Berne.

John P. Stroup, 72
A former mechanical engineer with Magnavox, John P. Stroup, 72, of Craigville, died at
4:20 a.m. today, July 30, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Stroup retired from Magnavox in 1986. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and
was a member and past commander of the American Legion.
Born Sept. 3, 1931 in Fort Wayne to Clarence G. and Mary L. Cary Stroup,his marriage on
May 1, 1953 in Fort Wayne was to the former Betty Foreman,who survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Cindy Ann) Brown of Churubusco and five
sons, John G. Stroup of Tallahassee, Fla.; Joseph A. Stroup of Monroe; James G. Stroup of
Cincinnati, Ohio; Jeff A. Stroup of Indianapolis and Daniel C. Stroup of Craigville. Also
surviving are 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Goodwin Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dan
York officiating and burial in Marion National Cemetery.
Calling at the funeral home will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday prior to the service. The
American Legion will perform a service at the funeral home after the funeral service.
