Dovie C. Begley, 86
Mother of Marie Zent of Warren, Dovie C. Begley, 86, died at 4:40 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at
Millers Merry Manor in Hartford City.
Born Aug. 11, 1917 in Scott County Va. to Jimmy and Otela Gillium Lane, her marriage to
Harmon C. Begley took place March 14, 1964 in Gate City, Va. He preceded her in death.
A resident of Montpelier since 1964, she had lived with her granddaughter near Pennville
before entering Miller’s Merry Manor recently.
She was a member of the Pentecostal Church in Gate City, Va.
Surviving in addition to her daughter in Warren are a son-in-law in Pennville, John
Binegar; a sister, Lou Ada Chappell, Richmond, Va.; a brother, Junior Lane, Gate City,
Va., seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and a daughter, P.
Shirlene Binegar.
Services Wednesday at 1 p.m. will be held at Glancy Funeral Homes-Walker Chapel,
Montpelier. Rev. Wilbur Taylor will officiate and burial will be in Brookside Memorial
Park, Montpelier.
Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Helen Helms, 95
A native of Bluffton who grew up in Liberty Center and graduated from Liberty Center High
School, Helen Helms, 95, of Muncie, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 26, 2003, at Westminster
Village in Muncie.
Born in Bluffton to John Calvin and Mary Haughton Ditzler, her marriage was to Lester
Helms, who died in 1957.
She was a graduate of the Anthony Wayne Business College in Fort Wayne, where she resided
for a number of years and where she was a secretary at Lincoln Life until her retirement
in 1972.
She was a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, a member and past
matron of Fort Wayne Chapter #432 Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Teti Sheri Temple
Daughters of the Nile and the Shrine Widows Group.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Don (Janet S.) Ahlersmeyer of Muncie, nine grandchildren
and 21 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death in addition to the husband, were a daughter, Linda Helms-Rogers,
who died in 1995, and three sisters, Vergil Renollet, Mildred Ditzler and Dorothy
Ditzler.
Calling is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Meeks Mortuary in Muncie and at the church
an hour before services on Thursday.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Krauss Chapel at Trinity English Lutheran Church
in Fort Wayne with Pastor Daniel Hamlin and Pastor Frederick Hasecke officiating. Burial
will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.

Lois D. Bauer, 94
Mother of Mrs. Denver (Janet) Amburgey of Bluffton, Lois D. Bauer, 94, of Huntington, died
Tuesday morning, Aug. 26, at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Huntington.
Born June 23, 1909 in Harrison Twp., Wells County, to Brent and Ida Captain Chalfant, she
married Ivan Hammond July 6, 1929 in Bluffton. He preceded her in death May 9, 1969.
Her second marriage was to Edmund Bauer, June 23, 1975, at Big Lake. He preceded her in
death in April of 1984.
She worked as a cake decorator for Heyerly’s Market and for Scott’s Foods. She attended
Six Mile Church.
In addition to the Bluffton daughter, she is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Dwayne
(Carolyn) Ziegler of Huntington, and Mrs. Lyle (Marianne) Cloud of Bartow, Fla.; two
stepdaughters, Mrs. Leroy (June) Burns of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Lois Stanchfield,
Houston, Texas; a stepson, E.J. Bauer of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Eva Reynolds of
Rockford, Ohio; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and five
great-great-grandchildren.
Services at 11 a.m. Saturday will be held at Goodwin Memorial Chapel with calling at the
funeral home from 2-8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at Six Mile Cemetery.
Memorials are to the donor’s choice.
Charles Hadley — Rites Pending
Charles Hadley of Ossian died this morning at the Hospice Home in Fort Wayne. Rites are
pending at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home.
Betty J. Roembke, 71
Mother of William Roembke of Ossian, Betty J. Roembke, 71, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, at her
residence in Fort Wayne.
Born in Whitley County, she was a cake decorator for 50 years, most recently with Scotts
supermarkets. She was also a member of the Happy Hens Club and Red Hats Society.
Surviving in addition to the son in Ossian are three other sons, Louis, John and Dennis
all of Fort Wayne; a brother, James Straub of Yoder; 11 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral
Home in Fort Wayne. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral
home.
Dr. Edgar P. Sprunger, 86
A retired Berne dentist, Dr. Edgar P. Sprunger, 86, died Wednesday morning at Adams County
Memorial Hospital following a one week illness.
Born Aug. 17, 1917 in Adams County to Robert L. and Rhoda Liechty Sprunger, he was united
in marriage Nov. 24, 1948 to Marguerite Michaud, who survives.
A veteran of U.S. Army service as a captain, Dr. Sprunger served as a dentist from 1948 to
1982. He volunteered his dentistry skills as a missionary in Africa, served on the board
of directors of the Fort Wayne Bible College, and was a former Rotary Club member. He
graduated from Goshen College and Northwestern University School of Dentistry.
Dr. Sprunger was a member of West Missionary Church in Berne and had served as a Sunday
school teacher.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Patrick and Reed Sprunger, both of Fort
Wayne; two daughters, Mrs. Rev. Barry (Andrea) McCune of Van Wert, Ohio, and Mrs. Jeff
(Lisa) Nickel of Corn, Okla.; four brothers, Donald, Eugene, and Roy Sprunger, all of
Berne, and Rev. Sam Sprunger of Hammond; a sister, Mrs. Dr. James (Betty) Gurley of Ann
Arbor, Mich.; and eight grandchildren.
Two other brothers, Rev. John Sprunger and Robert Lavere Sprunger, preceded him in death.
Services are scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at West Missionary Church under the
direction of Rev. Keith Rupp. Burial will be in M.R.E. Cemetery west of Berne.
Calling hours at Swiss Village Chapel are from 3-8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to
services Saturday at West Missionary Church.
Memorials may be made to Swiss Village, West Missionary Church or Gideons International.
Arrangements are being made by Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne.

Charles A. Hadley, 50
Charles A. Hadley, 50, of Ossian, died at 6:50 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 at the Hospice Home
in Fort Wayne.
He was born June 12, 1953 in Columbus. His parents are Arthur D. Hadley and Wilma J.
(McKim) Crippen. He married Louise M. (Poitras) Roth in Bluffton on Oct. 22, 1994.
A 1971 graduate of Huntington North High School, he worked at ITT Aerospace Communications
Division in Fort Wayne for 21 years. He was a sergeant in the Military Police of the U.S.
Army Reserve and a member and groundskeeper for the Ideal Fish & Game Club in
Churubusco for 19 years. He was a member of the Hope Missionary Church in Bluffton, and
the NRA. He was an avid collector of Civil War items and antique furniture.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father and step-mother, Arthur and Sally
Hadley of Vico, Ky.; his mother, Wilma (McKim) Crippen of Bippus; a daughter, Sherry
Hadley of Fort Wayne; a step-son, Mark J. Roth of Ossian; a brother, Donny Hadley of
Kendallville; and a sister, Mrs. Steve (Deb) Rittenhouse of Bippus.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Thoma/Rich, Hewitt &
Chaney Funeral Home in Bluffton and one hour prior to services at the church, which will
be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hope Missionary Church, with Pastors Gary Aupperle and
Matt Hartsell officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Fort Wayne.
Graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 111. Preferred memorials are to
the Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
Doris Dunaway Lutz, 82
A Wells County native, Doris Dunaway Lutz, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 26 at Doctors Hospital
in Augusta, Ga.
Born in Bluffton in 1921 to Clarence and Edith Turner Wolfe, she lived most of her life in
Bluffton and Liberty Township before moving to Mesa, Ariz., four years ago.
She is survived by a son, Max Dunaway of Mesa, two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
Interment rites were private.
Brenda S. Werling, 54
Brenda S.Werling, 54, of Decatur, died Thursday, Aug. 28 at Parkview Hospital in Fort
Wayne.
Born Aug. 27, 1949 in Decatur to Arthur W. and Darlene Redding Werling, she was an
administrative assistant and ADRP at General Electric in Fort Wayne since 1968. She is
survived by an aunt in Fort Wayne and several cousins in the area.
Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral
Home in Decatur, as well as one hour prior to the services which will be held Sunday at 2
p.m. at the St.Paul Lutheran Church, Preble. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Preferred memorials to the church or Wyneken Lutheran School.
Julia E. Bennett, 79
A sister of a Montpelier woman, Julia E. (Jordan) Bennett, 79, of Anderson, died at St.
John’s Hospital in Anderson Sunday, Aug. 10 after a short illness.
Born June 8, 1924 in Greensburg to Harry L. and Esta E. Trester Jordan, she attended
Montpelier High School and had lived in Anderson the past several years.
She is survived by three sons, Tom Noller of Indianapolis, Terry Noller of Fort Wayne and
Brett Bennett of Avon Park, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Jerry (Barbara) Kitterman of Montpelier;
a brother, Harry Jordan of Graceville, Fl.; her first husband, Keith Noller of Redkey; and
four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Lonnie Bennett.
A memorial service will be held at Brookside Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The body
was cremated.
Arrangements were handled by Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel in Montpelier.
