Mary E. Arnold, 87
A native of Huntington County, Mary E. Arnold, 87, died Thursday, Nov. 13 at the United
Methodist Memorial Home.
She entered the Methodist home in January of 2000, returning to the Warren area after
living at Big Lake in Albion for the past 18 years.
She attended Salamonie Township-Warren High School and worked at the Huntington County
Courthouse for 17 years, retiring in 1977.
Born May 9, 1916 in Huntington County to Perry and Sarah Jane Hart Daugherty, her marriage
on Nov. 6, 1937 in Dillman was to Jacob Arnold, who preceded her in death on June 13,
2001.
She attended the Hillcrest Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by three sons, Jerry L. Arnold of Pelham, N.C., Harold W. Arnold and
Gerald D. Arnold, both of Huntington, a sister, Wilma Edris of Zephyrhills, Fla., six
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Harry D., two sisters and two brothers.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Glancy Funeral Homes H. Brown & Son Chapel
in Warren. Calling at the funeral home will be today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Rev. John Pattison will officiate at services and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at
Warren.

Thomas R. Pease, 40
Bluffton native Thomas R. Pease, 40, of Arlington, Texas, died suddenly at 2:54 a.m.
Sunday, Nov. 16 at Bluffton Regional Medical Center after suffering a heart attack. He had
been in the area for the weekend, attending a family wedding.
Born in Bluffton on Aug. 11, 1963 to John J. and Esther L. Ginter Pease, he married Julie
Brown in Arlington, Texas on May 10, 2003. She survives.
A 1981 Bluffton High School graduate, he attended Indiana State University on a baseball
scholarship. After he received his degree in 1985, he moved to Texas and became a member
of the Carrollton Police Department.
During his 18-year career, he has served as a detective for 15 years, has served on the
S.W.A.T. team and was currently assigned to a Special Task Force, working with the federal
Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
Mr. Pease was involved in several programs that worked with young people: the Explorers,
for those exploring a law enforcement career; “Shattered Dreams,” providing education to
stay drug and alcohol free; and the Cops for Kids program.
He received several meritorious service awards and was named Officer of the Year twice by
the Carrollton Police Department. He received recognition of outstanding accomplishments
by the International Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association, the Office of National
Drug Control, and by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces. In 1993, he was
recognized by the U.S. Navy for his diligent efforts in solving a Carrollton murder case.
Other survivors include his father, of Bluffton; two step-children at home, Kyle A. Brown
and Jaclyn M. Brown; and two sisters, Mrs. Herb (Janet) Heyerly of Bluffton and Mrs. Noel
(Gloria) Phegley of Columbia City. He was preceded in death by one brother, James. A.
Pease.
Services are scheduled for Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in
Bluffton, with Ted Ellis officiating. Calling will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the
Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service
Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Preferred memorials to the Bluffton D.A.R.E. program.

Billy G. Flowers — Rites Pending
Billy G. Flowers, 72, of Bluffton, died at 7:10 a.m. today at Bluffton Regional Medical
Center. Arrangements are pending at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home.
Mina Dippel, 100
Mina Dippel, 100, a former Ossian and Craigville resident, died Sunday, Nov. 16 at
Lutheran Home in Fort Wayne.
Born March 13, 1903 in Hoagland to Frederick and Louise Pannie Schoppman, she married
Frederick Dippel on Oct. 23, 1930 in Fort Wayne; he died Aug. 28, 1971.
A seamstress, she worked in the millinary department at the Wolf & Dessauer store for
ten years. She was a founder and the oldest living member of the Bethlehem Lutheran
Church, where she was a member of the Widow’s Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Delbert (Wilma L.) Bauermeister of Fort Wayne; a
daughter-in-law, Charlotte Dippel of Ossian; four grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Rolland, five sisters and two
brothers.
Services are scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in rural
Ossian with Pastor William Brege officiating. Visitation hours are Wednesday from 2 to 4
and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home in Ossian, and one hour prior to
the services Thursday at the church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Preferred memorials to the Church Building Fund or
the donor’s choice.
Keith R. Platt, 75
Services for Wells County native Keith R. Platt, 75, of Huntington, will be held at noon
Thursday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary in Huntington. Mr. Platt died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 15 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born Sept. 10, 1928 in Wells County to Elmer and Vera Horn Platt, he married Mary Ervin on
June 5, 1949 in Markle; she survives. He retired in 1989 as the business representative
for Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No. 20.
Other survivors include two sons, David Platt of Fort Wayne and Donald Platt of
Huntington; three daughters, Linda Stearns of Fort Wayne, Sharon Hoch of Huntington and
Donna Williams of Painesville, Ohio; a brother, Ralph Platt of Jacksonville, Fla.; a
sister, Betty Cunningham of Zanesville; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be
in the Mt. Etna Cemetery. Preferred memorials to the Sumner Sheets Wildlife Museum, the
Markle Fish and Game Club or the Kidney Dialysis Foundation.

Billy G. Flowers, 72
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, during which he was a prisoner of war from December
of 1950 to August of 1953, Billy G. Flowers, 72, of 1527 West Western Ave., Bluffton, died
at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. He had been in
failing health for the past two years.
An avid antique car enthusiast, he attended various antique car shows over a considerable
area and including 25 consecutive antique vehicle parades at the Bluffton Street Fair.
His service to the nation was cited in recognition events of veterans organizations over
the years. Out of the depths of the Korean War’s critical period when he was captured and
survived terrible hardship grew also the sufficient national determination that eventually
prevailed in the Cold War.
Born Aug. 25, 1931, in Bluffton, he was a son of Theodore Ray and Pansy Moyer Flowers. His
marriage was in Bluffton in 1954 to Norma Jean Highlen, who preceded him in death in 1977.
A lifelong resident of Wells County, he retired from Caylor-Nickel Clinic in 1977. He was
a half-century member of American Legion Post 111.
Surviving are two sons, Ken W. Flowers and Tim Flowers, both of Bluffton; one daughter,
Carrie Story of Noblesville; three sisters, Mary Ross of Bluffton, Helen Ray of Decatur
and Marie Vore of Redkey; four brothers, Jim, Wayne and Roger, all three of Bluffton, and
Don of Berne; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Harley Flowers, and three sisters, Judy Davis,
Mamie Clevenger and Catherine Brown.
Calling will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday and for an hour before the service Friday at
Thoma-Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home, where services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday
with Rev. Stephen W. Austin officiating.
Burial will be in Six Mile Cemetery, with military gravesite rites by American Legion Post
111. Preferred Memorials to American Legion Post 111.
Walter R. Klefeker, 69 -- Rites Pending
Walter Richard Klefeker, 69, died this morning, Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at his Poneto
residence. Arrangements are pending at Thomas-Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home.
Louis A. Schoenike, 97
A retired forge operator at Dana Weatherhead in Antwerp, Ohio, Louis A. Schoenike, 97, of
Fort Wayne and formerly of Antwerp and Fremont, Ohio, died at the Towne House Health
Center in Fort Wayne Monday, Nov. 17. 2003.
He was born July 29, 1905, at Birnamwood, Wisconsin to John Von Julius and Clara Krubsack
Schoenike. His marriage was on May 28, 1933, at Birnamwood, Wis., to Elle M. Umland, who
preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 1998. He was a member of the St, Mark’s Lutheran Church
in Fort Wayne.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy A. Ness of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Janice M.
Thiele of Fort Wayne; one son, Robert L. Schoenike of Warrenton, Virginia; one sister,
Laura Lemke of Birnamwood, Wis., six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home, Ossian
Chapel, and one hour before services Saturday at the church. Services will be at 10:30
a.m. Saturday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, with pastor Richard Vonesh
officiating. Burial will be in St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials to St. Mark’s
Endowment Fund or Hospice.
Rebecca “Becky” Quillen, 89
A resident of rural Hartford City, Rebecca “Becky” Quillen, 89, died at 7:04 p.m. Monday,
Nov. 17, at Blackford Community Hospital, Hartford City.
Born June 29, 1914 to Clinton and Gertrude Brunson Bookout, she married Paul E. Quillen
Sept. 10, 1932 at Pennville. He survives.
A 1932 graduate of Poling High School, she was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church
in Dunkirk.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Betty Jo Armstrong, Hartford
City, and Mrs. Charles (Martha Pearl) Denney of Lead Hill, Ark.; two brothers James and
Wendell Bookout, both of Hartford City; two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Joan) Duke, Montpelier, and
Sue Brown, Marion; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.
Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel,
Montpelier. Officiating will be Pastor Randy Davis and burial will be in Twin Hill
Cemetery, Pennville.
Calling hours are from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Elva M. Foreman, 75
Elva M. Foreman, 75, Decatur, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Woodcrest Nursing Center in
Decatur. Born Sept. 22, 1928 to Edwin and Elsie Habel Doyle, she married Roland Foreman
July 11, 1953 in Tioga, Ill. He preceded her in death July 25, 1984.
A hairdresser and homemaker, she was former resident of Berne and a member of the Ladies
Moose in Decatur.
Survivors include two sons, James and Alan, both of Decatur, a brother, Harold Doyle of
Quincy, Ill.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren,
Services at 11 a.m. Saturday will be held at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva.
Pastor Josh Merold will officiate and burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Berne.
Calling hours will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana.

Walter Richard Klefeker Sr., 69
A resident of rural Poneto, Walter Richard Klefeker Sr., 69, died at 5:35 a.m. at his
residence Wednesday, Nov. 20. He had been in failing health the past year.
Born May 14, 1934 in Coal Town, Ohio, to Robert and Ada Riegle Klefeker Sr., he married
the former Peggy Teeple at Las Vegas, Nev., Sept. 18, 1989.
Retired from Dana Corp. after 30 years of service, Mr. Klefeker was a member of the
Southern Wells Community Church, the Bluffton Masonic Lodge #145, Fort Wayne Scottish
Rite, and the Bluffton Moose Lodge. He was also engaged in farming.
Survivors include four sons, Doug of Keystone, Walter Jr. of Ossian, Bruce of Warren, and
Steve of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Diana Collins, Liberty Center; three step sons, Jack
Steen of Celina, Ohio; Rick Brotherton of Berne, and Gregory Brotherton of Portland; two
step daughters, Deborah Ross of Decatur and Carla Runyon of Portland; two brothers, Robert
Jr. of Saluda, N.C., and Stuart of Bluffton; 11 grandchildren, 12 stepgrandchildren; five
great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren. His first wife, Diane Meadows
Enyeart survives and resides in Decatur.
Services Saturday at 10 a.m. will be held at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home.
Officiating will be Rev. Rick Bullock and burial will be in Grove Cemetery.
Masonic funeral services by Bluffton Lodge #145 will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the
funeral home.
Calling hours are 2 to 9 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to services Saturday at the
funeral home.

Mary Jane Leismer Powell, 73
A former resident of Bluffton, Mary Jane Leismer Powell, 73, of Connersville, died Tuesday
evening, Nov. 17, at her residence.
Powell’s first husband, J. Earl Leismer, managed the J.C. Penney Store here a number of
years ago. She had been a resident of Connersville for more than 34 years.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cambridge City.
Survivors include her second husband, Max Powell, whom she married in 1992; 11 children,
three sisters, and 16 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband; a daughter; a sister, and two
grandchildren.
Services will be this evening at 7:30 p.m. at Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home, 920
Central Ave., Connersville. Pastor Mal Gibson of the First Baptist Church of Cambridge
City will officiate and burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Petosky, Mich. at 9
a.m. Saturday.
Calling is this evening at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m.

Mary L. Legg, 82
The mother of James R. Legg of Warren, Mary L. Legg, 82, of Wabash, died at 2:29 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Americare Living Center in Wabash.
Born Jan. 27, 1921 in Wabash County to James and Ada Aronet Glover, she married Oliver
Legg in Marion on Aug. 24, 1948; he died Aug. 24, 1996.
Other survivors include two other sons, Larry Abney of Van Buren and William Legg of
Calif.; three daughters, Retha Murphy of Michigan, Judy Weaver of Arkansas, and Mary Jane
Lengel of Wabash; four sisters, Pauline James, Mickey Buck and Jerry Olinzer, all of
Marion, and Susie Warner of Gas City; and 17 grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Roy, Jim, Fred,
Bud and Dan Glover; and two sisters, Erma Crowell and Easter Peters.
There will be no visitation or services. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory in Marion.
Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel in Warren is in charge of arrangements.
Rosaline Ault, 77
Services for Rosaline Ault, 77, a long time Pennville resident, will be held Sunday at 2
p.m. in the Pennville Chapel of the Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ault died Thursday, Nov. 20, enroute to Bluffton Regional Medical Center; she had
been a resident of Millers Merry Manor Nursing Center in Dunkirk for the past year.
Born Jan. 11, 1926 in Marion to Manderville C. and Hazel Lockwood Prouty, she married
Orval E. Ault on June 13, 1942; he died Dec. 27, 2002. She had worked at Armstrong Glass
in Dunkirk and as a housekeeper in the Pennville area. She was a member of the Pennville
American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by a son, Don E. Ault of Poneto; three daughters, Sadonna Rose Pryor of
Dunkirk, Mrs. Keith (Carol) Frauhiger of Bluffton, and Mrs. Jim (Jill) Patrick of Monroe;
two brothers, Keith Prouty of Alsea, Oreg., and Harold Prouty of Pennville; a sister,
Betty Stansbury of Pennville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, a grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Visitation hours will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday and prior to the service Sunday at the
funeral home in Pennville. Pastor Randy Davis will officiate and burial will be in the
IOOF Twin Hills Cemetery. Preferred memorials to the Jay County Heart Foundation.
