A former Bluffton City council member, John Spencer McCurdy, 90, of 903 South Jersey St.
died of heart failure at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wells Community Hospital, where he had been
a patient since Feb. 22.
Mr. McCurdy served as a member of City Council Third District from 1956 to 1959 under
mayor Robert Venis and a second term 1960 through 1963 under mayor Charles W. Decker.
Previously he had served eight years as a member of the city's Park Board.
Employed 28 years at the former Estey piano Co., he was later employed at the General
Electric Co. in Fort Wayne and retired in 1954.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mr. McCurdy was a member of the 100F and
Rebekah Lodges for more than 60 years.
Born Sept. 27, 1889 in Richland County, O., he was a son of McKinley and Nancy Cole
McCurdy. A first marriage was to Viola Huffman, who died in 1958. His marriage to Mattie
Myers, who survives, took place May 23, 1959 in Loudonville, O.
In addition to the wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Irene Walker of Bluffton; a
stepdaughter, Mrs. Ivan (Mildred) Curren of Loudonville, O., and five grandchildren.
Calling after 1 p. m. today will be at the Thoma-Rich Funeral Home with Dr. Philip
Hazelton officiating at services there at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Fairview
Cemetery.
Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home by Rebekah Lodge.
Preferred form of memorial is a contribution to the Cancer Society.
