All during the fifties, each evening we would have to make a trip to the Bliss. It was
the contact place for the bus line running from Indianapolis north. For Dad's
business (ABS) the bull farm was located in Carmel, Indiana - then nothing but farmland.
Each evening the farm would ship the collection supplies for the next days' business
on the bus, and it would be delived to the Bliss. We called it "the box." It
was about 12-14 inches long, about 6"x6" square. It was packed with cans of
refrigerant, and the glass vials of semen were wrapped in padded insulated wrap. About
once a month or two, some of got to make a road trip to Carmel to return the boxes,
packing material, and vials to be reused.
This was a nightly trip to Bluffton, and one that was used as a reward for those who had
been good that day. We took turns getting to go. It was also a nice way to get the baby
to sleep - take 'em for a ride.
Eventually, technology improved, supplies were frozen and kept in a liquid nitrogen tank,
and the end of the trips for the box.
I hadn't thought about this for a long time.
