Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The Allen Co. Public Library does have all (I think) of the Indiana WPA
Index Books. I've copied pages from them with my ancestors' names and
it makes it very easy to request certificate copies from indivudual
courthouses. It lists the book and page number of the record. I've
found that quite a few libraries in different Indiana counties also have
copies of these index books, at least for their own county and sometimes
for a nearby county.
When I went to the Wells Co. courthouse to request my grandmother's
marriage record, they use the same book to look up the record. :) It
was *very* easy! :) I've also found the people in the Wells Co.
courthouse to be very nice and helpful (vs. those counties whose
employees grow fangs at genealogy requests! LOL).
Does anyone know if other states have these WPA Indexes available? I've
not run across any, but sadly, I'm not able to do much out-of-state
research in person.

Do you know the location of these cemeteries? I know there's a Jones
Cemetery south of Markle, IN on Hwy 3, Wells Co.
I need to go have a look-see at that one, myself, pretty soon, so if
anyone needs info from that cemetery, send me your names and I'll check
when I go. I don't recall ever seeing an "office" where written records
would be kept there, but will check on that as well.

If you are looking for the locations of the cemeteries I would write to the
Bluffton, Wells County, IN Library or ask the Allen County Library if the
listing gave a location.
The WPA made some good records for Wells County and you might find a death
certificate for those buried in the cemeteries. I have a death certificate
for my great-great-grandmother who died in 1893, one for my
great-great-great-grandmother who died in 1907, and the birth certificate for
my grandmother who was born in Wells County on 17 Feb 1896. I found
reference to all these documents in the WPA Records. I know that State
Library in Indianapolis has these WPA published records and I would think
that Ft. Wayne would have them also.
With the rectangular survey of the land in Indiana it is not hard to find a
cemetery with the legal land description, but most cemetery books will give
easy directions.

To add to the question Nancy posed, about where to find records from
inactive cemeteries, I would be interested to know which of the cemeteries
are maintained (or are supposed to be maintained) by county trustees, and
how we can go about getting the burial information - this would be a matter
of public record, wouldn't it? Which of the cemeteries are commercial in
nature, and what is the contact information for them? How many of the
local churches keep records of their cemeteries?
The Blackford-Wells Genealogy Society is supposed to be organizing a
committee to update the cemetery listings, and while I can't help out, I
would encourage any of you that live in the vicinity to try to get involved
in this project, as it will benefit us all. Every day, the inscriptions on
hundreds of headstones become harder and harder to read...
Here's the info sent to me by Connie Brubaker, who is Vice President of the
society:
"The Genealogy Society will be assisting in the updating of the Wells County
cemetery records. Volunteers are needed to assist in this project. If
interested, contact Connie Brubaker, cbrubaker(a)ldr.coolsky.com"
I think Connie's on this list, too. Connie, if you're out there, let us
know how the project is progressing!

I have the same question.
After the death of my g-g-grandmother, my g-g-grandfather, Jacob Smelzer Zion,
married Susan Sonner. I have not been able to locate his headstone and thought
perhaps he may be buried in Sonner Cemetery.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this?
Joann
The information I found was in a book in Ft.Wayne titled "Wells County,
Indiana Cemetery Records v.2" compiled by Ingabee Brineman Minniear.
It is a photo-offset copy, Ft.Wayne Public Library, published in 1972. The
call # is Gc 977.201 W46m v.2 I hope this will help you and anyone else
looking for ancestors in Wells Co.
In the meantime, I sure could use some help with my original question of how
to find records from inactive cemeteries in Wells Co. Nancy
I have just joined this list and already have some questions. I found
cemetery listings at the Ft.Wayne library which indicate relatives buried in
Jones (aka Sonner) cemetery as well as in Lincoln (aka Friends) cemetery.
Both cemeteries are now inactive. I would like to know if anyone knows who
would have those records or would have a suggestion in what direction to turn
in looking for them. Any information would be gratefully accepted. Thanks in
advance, Nancy
