Hi Luann,
This is my brick wall as well. I decend from Martha Jane's son Alva Bagshaw. How are
you related?
I am pretty certain that Rebecca Akers is NOT the mother of Martha Jane since the 1850
census shows Martha Jane (age 8) and Victor (age 7) living with their father Joseph (age
32) and a female Martha Wooten (age 60), whom I assume is Joseph's mother, in Clark
County, Indiana. There is no other woman listed as living with the family so that leads
me to believe Joseph's wife and the children's mother was deceased and
Joseph's mother helping care for the children. Martha died in 1854 and is buried in
the Brown Cemetary in Washington County, Indiana along with a Lucinda Wootan Brown whom I
am assuming is her daughter and a sister to Joseph.
I am basing my assumptions on the Martha age 60 living with Joseph on the 1850 census
being born in Virginia plus subsequent censuses stating Joseph and Lucinda's mother
was born in Virgina and both list their father as being born in North Carolina, I have to
believe Joesph and Lucinda are siblings. With both Joseph and Lucinda both being born in
Indiana I have been unable to locate any other Wootan's in Indiana that would match
names/dates to give them a father or further family besides their descendants.
I did find 2 John Wootans. One is the son of Joseph and Rebecca born in 1861, died 1903,
buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery in Clark Co, Indiana. The other, John was born in 1834
and died in 1898 with burial in the Swayback Cemetery in Washington Co., Indiana. The
John that was born in 1834 is listed on Find A Grave with a contributor's notation
that states that the cemetery records say he born April 5, 1834, died October 6, 1898 and
was the son of Joseph A. Wootan and his first wife. I, like the contributor to Find A
Grave, have not been able to locate this John Wootan on census records. I have only been
able to locate the John that married Lousia Bailey and was the son of Rebecca Akers and
Joseph Wootan
I do have a copy of the obit for Martha Jane Wootan Bagshaw; however, I currently do not
have access to it (in storage with other geneology records). I do not remember the obit
listing her parents names but I could be mistaken. If you receive your copy and it does
list them please forward!
Look forward to hearing from you!
