Hi Terry:
Lee does not appear in the index of surnames in my maps book. There are the following
Lees in the book, "History of Washington County 1884" published by the
historical society: Branson, Celia, E.C, George L., Jamison, Joseph, Mary G. Michael,
Sarah J., and William. The mention of Joseph Lee is on page 781 in a list of postmasters
in order of their appointment: "Robert Denney, James Stephens, Corkius Brown, C.
Prow, A. Overman, William Pollard, J.T.C. Wilkins, George W. Bartlett, Joseph Lee, John
Huffman, Joshua Davis, Samuel Martin, R.C. Martin, and C.G. Robinson. This is referring
to the town of Campbellsburg/Buena Vista founded by John Pollard in 1849 and named Buena
Vista after the Mexican battle, but the twin towns were most generally referred to as
Campbellsburg. A James, Jonathan and William Lee are listed in Washington County 1820
census, and multiple Lees in other counties in that same census. The 1820 census shows a
Joseph Lee
in Dearborn, Delaware and Switzerland counties. Samuel Lee is on page 268 and page 305
of the book, "Pioneer Pickings" Page 268 gives a list of Washington County men
who served during the Civil War at Rich Mountain in West Virginia and Page 305 is talking
about the Battle of Buena Vista and states that "Michael Lee, father of Branson Lee,
Samuel Lee and Mrs.Henry Streaker; James Slayden and William Richardson" lost their
lives during that engagement in Mexico.
You can contact the John Hay Center in Salem for additional help in finding records for
Samuel Lee. Kathy Wade is very helpful. They have a great library there. Give them a
call or check out their website for a list of books available for purchase from them. The
Washington County Historical Society published the books I've quoted. Also, you might
get lucky in finding some Lee researcher has deposited their research in the family files
there. I host a family history research site for my two main lines and their collateral
families -- mostly families who were in the earliest settlers in the Indiana Territory
before it became a State. I don't seem to have any connection to Lees. Sorry I
couldn't help you on the land records.

Message Board Post:
Thank you, Janice.
I am looking for data on Samuel Lee, who died about 1844 in Washington County.
In 1834 he applied for Rev. War pension payments thru Washington County.
He appears on the 1840 Census on p.157 and his son, also Samuel Lee, is listed as living
next door.
Any information you can find is appreciated.
Terry in sunny SC
