Message Board Post:
I am searching for any materials, especially photographs, diaries, and legal documents,
relating to the children of Mary E. Harris. Mary was born January 13, 1823. Mary Mize
married Henry Harrison in Washington County, Indiana, Sept. 3, 1843. This may not have
been her first marriage and Henry may not have been the father of Mary's first child,
William Silas Harrison, who gave birthdates of both December 1840 and 1841. By 1860,
Henry and Mary had nine children, but Henry had either died or deserted the family. The
children at this time were: William Silas, 19, John Riley, 15, Lucinda, 13, Nancy Ann,
12, Henry Jacob, 10, Sarah Jane, 8, James T. Howard, 7, Susannah, 3 and Louise Ellen, 10
mos.. Sometime in the mid 1860s, Mary and all of the Harrisons shortened their names to
Harris (I have found no record of Mary marrying a Harris) and many moved north to Jackson
County. Mary would eventually marry three more times, dying as Mary Wheeler July 23,
1901.
Of the children, I know that Louise died at the age of 1, Sept 22, 1860. I do not have
firm death dates for Lucinda (who married William Bottorff in 1864 and had at least five
children, and who appears to have later married a James Payton in Clark County, Ind.),
Susannah (who married Samuel F. House Dec. 31, 1874, but who was widowed by 1880), or
James T. Howard. William Silas, Nancy Ann and Henry Jacob all used their middle names.
Sarah Jane married John Grisamore and ended up being buried in Evergreen Cemetery in
Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1924.
My major focus of research is on Annie (Nancy Ann) and this research is academic rather
than genealogical, but I am very interested in hearing from any descendants of any of her
siblings that may have information and stories about the family. I will be more than
happy to share family information I have already collected.
Thank you!
