Can anyone connect to these people? I am especially interested in determining who Father
and Mother Louden are.
===========================
Generation No. 1
1. FATHER1 LOUDEN was born in PA. He married (1) MOTHER LOUDEN. She was born in NC.
Notes for FATHER LOUDEN:
The first Lowden/Louden ancestors has still to be determined. The following facts have
been found and may upon review help determine who these people are.
Marriage Registers
John Loudon and Jane Wattles applied for a marriage certificate on February 17th, 1813.
Records of the Clark County, IN Commissioners meetings report:
Monday, May 19, 1817: "John Lowden permission to keep a tavern in town of New
Washington with Joseph Bower (Justice of the Peace).
May 1, 1818: "James Lowden permitted to keep a tavern in Town of Bethlehem for one
year."
John Lowden was also appointed the constable in New Washington Township and an election
was held at his home.
May 2, 1818: When the Township of Springhill wanted a road from Bethlehem to the county
line towards Madison, James Lowden was appointed as one of three to determine the best
path.
Children of FATHER LOUDEN and MOTHER LOUDEN are:
2. i. HIRAM LOUDEN, b. 03 Jan 1808, Clark County, IN; d. 24 May 1890, Clark County, IN.
3. ii. THOMAS LOUDEN, b. Abt. 1810, Indiana.
iii. GEORGE LOUDEN.
Child of FATHER LOUDEN is:
iv. THOMAS LOWDEN.
Generation No. 2
2. HIRAM LOUDEN (FATHER1) was born 03 Jan 1808 in Clark County, IN1, and died 24 May 1890
in Clark County, IN. He married (1) HARRIET MARGARET JONES 31 May 1827 in Scott County,
IN, daughter of JOSEPH JONES and FRANCES THOMPSON. She was born 12 Oct 1806 in KY, and
died 07 Apr 1851 in Clark County, IN. He married (2) FRANCES AUGUSTA JONES 27 Jan 1853 in
Clark County, IN, daughter of JOSEPH JONES and FRANCES THOMPSON. She was born 1814 in IN,
and died 01 Jul 1883 in Bethlehem, Clark County, IN.
Notes for HIRAM LOUDEN:
The earliest records of this family spells the name Lowden.
Hiram's parents are an unsolved mystery. The 1820 Census for Charlestown Township,
Clark County, Indiana lists a George Louden. He reported:
1 male 45 or older
2 males less than 10
1 males older than 10 but younger than 16
3 females less than 10
2 females older than 10 but younger than 16
2 females 16, but not yet 18
1 female 18, but not yet 26
2 foreigners who were not naturalized (probably George and the oldest female)
The 1820 Census for Bethlehem Township, Clark County, Indiana lists a John Louden. He
reported:
1 male at least 26 but not yet 45
3 males under age 10
1 female under age 10
1 female at least 16, but not yet 18
1 foreigner who was not naturalized
Since Hiram was born in 1808, it would seem that George is his father. In the 1880
Census, Hiram reported that his father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in
North Carolina. Census records are not always accurate because people usually reported
what they were told about their parents.
On May 31, 1827 he married the neighbor girl by the name of Harriett Margaret Jones. Her
father, Joseph Jones sold Hiram 50 acres of land located in Section 2 of Township 1 in
Clark County on February 17, 1846. They had three children. She passed away April 7,
1851 and was buried in New Washington, Indiana a town about two miles west of Bethlehem.
Hiram then married her sister, Frances Agusta Jones on January 27, 1853. She passed away
in 1883, and was buried on the farm in a family cemetery. There is no tombstone since
only rocks were piled for markers.
The Clark County GenWeb Site indicates the following information: "This cemetery is
located behind the Otto Store in Bethlehem Township.
TKemp wrote: 'This cemetery is located on my in-laws farm. You are correct there is
only one marked headstone but I know there are more graves. I will ask my husband's
grandmother and find out if she knows any of the other names. She grew up there. My
information indicates there is only one stone at this site, that of James Louden. '
"
Hiram passed away in 1890 and it is believed he was buried in the family cemetery as no
other cemetery record can be found. A search of Clark County records for a death
certificate in July, 2000 turned up none on file. The Jeffersonville, IN newspaper,
National Democrat, dated May 24, 1890 reports the following information: "Mr. Louden
died at his home three miles east of town today and will be buried in this place tomorrow
at 9 o'clock." (Copy in files.)
The 1830 Clark County, IN census lists the following information for Hiram:
Male 20 but <30 1
Female <5 2
Female 20 but <30 1
Also listed is a Thomas Lowden whom I feel is Hiram's brother:
Male 20 but < 30 1
Female 20 but < 30 1
The 1840 Clark County, IN census lists for Hiram Lowden:
Male 30 but <40 1
Female under 5 1
Female 5 but < 10 1
Female 10 but < 15 2
Female 30 but < 40 1
This seems to say that Hiram and Harriet had 4 daughters. The next census lists only 3,
with 1 of the girls being born after the 1840 census. These three have been traced to
later census records. This leads me to believe two other daughters either died or were
married in the 1940's. Further research needs to be done.
There is no listing for Thomas Lowden in all of Clark County.
The 1850 Clark County, IN census lists the following information:
Hiram, 41, farmer, real property $500
Harriet, 41
Minerva, age 13
Angeline, age 11
Nancy J., age 8
Also listed living in a near but separate dwelling are:
(Frances) Augusta Jones, age 35
Daniel, age 15
Hiram, age 13
(William) Samuel, age 11 (Jacob, age 8
Richard, age 5
Isabel, age 4
It is the opinion of professional researcher Richard Enochs that Hiram was fathering
children with Frances while married to Harriet.
The following 1860 Clark County, IN census information:
Hiram, 52, white, farmer, born IN, real property:$3,000, personal property: $1,260, not
literate
Frances A., 45, white, born IN, not literate

last name)

Also noted in the 1860 Census is that Minerva has married to Romanus C. Phillipy and they
are parents of Mary C. age 2 and Martha E. age 1. Living with them is Angeline Louden,
age 18.
The following 1880 Bethlehem Township, Clark County, IN census lists obtained from
