The Washington County Indiana Historical publication, "Pioneer Pickings"
contains four Enlands: Joseph pg 307, Joshua and Susannah pg 110 and William pgs 298 and
307, concluding on 389 & 390.
Pg 110 states: "William G. Warriner married July 26, 1827 to Susannah England, a
daughter of Joshua" and the balance of the statement concludes on Pg 389 & 390:
"England, who died in Salem a few years since, at Warriner's residence. William
G. lived with George Hattabaugh, out on the ridge for two years before he was married.
His wife and her father's family lived on Delaney's Creek. William G. purchased a
piece of land, being the same where Abel Shields now resides in Monroe Township, believing
he said "in having the cage before he got the bird." He lived there about ten
years and then moved down on Delaney's Creek in 1837, where he spent his time in
farming, peeling bark, cutting hoop poles and hauling the same to market. He had no
necessity for use of nails or bolts if he could find a hickory wite, for he could make a
trace chain, a wagon lock, a coupling pole, or even withe the tire on the wheel of a wagon
when had one of those
indispensable withes. Some may thi!
nk that this is an exaggeration, but there are too many living witnesses of its truth for
it to be gainsaid. Warriner lived in Monroe township on the Creek until 1866 when he
removed to Salem where he built him a fine residence in which he now resides. His
children were nine, seven, of whom are living and all residing in this county at the
time. Hiw wife was seventy years of age on the 26th of December, 1876. "Uncle
Billy," as he is familiarly called, prides himself as having voted for Gen.Andrew
Jackson for President in 1824 as his first vote. He has been faithful in that line ever
since; and although old as he is, when thetelegraph was received last October, announcing
as certain that "Blue Jeans" Williams was elected, he jumpedupand cracked his
heels together twice before striking theground. Long may he wave." This excert was
labeled Pioneer Pickings No. 86, The Salem Democrat, January 31, 1877.
The name William England appears on Pg 298 (dtd. Feb. 19, 1879) and again on Pg 307 (dtd.
March 26, 1879) within a list of Washington Co. military men raised in 1846 in response to
the war with Mexico.
