Message Board Post:
My copy of the Monroe Twp. Cemetery book published by the Wash. Co. Historical Society
lists several Calloways, including Micajah. However, the only Davis' listed in Peugh
Cemetery are:
Elijah H. b 1805 d. 29 Sept. 1887, age 82 yrs 1 mo and 21 days; son of James & Nancy
Hawkins Davis
Paulina H. b 13 Jan 1810, d 13 March 1887, age 77 yrs 2 mo 21 days; wife of Elijah;
daughter of Larkin & Elizabeth McClary Nicholson
and Ezra Davis b 7 Aug 1832 d 8 June 1909, husband of Mary Birdsong.
Your James Davis is mentioned on page 9 of the book Pioneer Pickings (No. 37, The Salem
Democrat, Jan. 26, 1876) as follows: "In 1805 [Micajah] Callaway, married Frankie
Hawins for a second wife, and John H. Callaway, better known as Hock Callaway, is the
oldest child by that marriage. There were other children, among them Noble Callaway, who
is also a life long resident of this county. In 1810, Callaway and James Davis, the
father of Elijah Davis, removed from Kentucky to this county. The former settled where
John H. Callaway now lives, and the the latter, east of Callaway's of the farm now
owned by Thos. Williams."
On page 353 of the same book (No. 201, The Salem Democrat, Dec. 31, 1879) he is mentioned
again in connection with a biography of George W. Low: "George W. came to Indiana in
1815. He married Marta P. Davis, daughter of James Davis, in 1829 and she died in 1862.
Hope this helps you.
