Hi Everyone,
I just returned from my first visit (after 22 years of researching) to
Washington Co. I certainly did meet a lot of nice people there and had some
success finding my ancestor Anderson PAVEY's land and burial site (Newby
Cemetery.)
Unfortunately, one thing I found at this old cemetery concerns me.....
Samuel NEWBY (1776, NC - 1859, Wash. Co) headstone has broke off, and is
starting to get buried into the ground pretty deep. We tried to get it up,
but needed a lot more muscle than just the 2 of us had. It had been covered
with leaves and dirt, but I cleaned it off and the writing is still in
pretty good condition.
I know there has been several of his descendants who have researched this
line (don't know if there is anyone in Washington Co. area or not), but I do
believe that this tombstone could probably be saved if it could be gotten to
fairly quickly. It would be such a shame to just 'let it go.' The cemetery
is easily found but you must walk through some farm ground to get there. I
have explicit directions (it's south of Rosebud) if anyone would care to
have them. It appears that the local farmer probably goes in and does do
some tending to it. It's in a grove of trees with a fence around it
(unlocked gate.)
Samuel NEWBY was married to Mary BEAMAN (1808, Randolph Co, NC.) Mary
BEAMAN was a sister to Peninah Allene Beaman PAVEY, wife of Anderson PAVEY
(my ancestors.) Samuel's grave is right in front of Anderson PAVEY's (which
is still standing and easy to find.)
