Here are some of the articles I've collected about this shooting: [January, 1896, Item dated January 14, 1896] - On Monday, January 6th, about 10 o'clock, our quiet little town received one of the greatest shocks ever visited on our people, probably the worst, and without parallel in the county. It was the murder and suicide of which most of the readers of this and other papers are all aware. By request, we give in impartial account and impart the facts just as they are and to do justice, as best we may, to both families and relatives of the deceased parties. Seven years ago last July, Walter Coombs was married to an exceedingly good looking young lady, Elizabeth Bowman. Walter was the son of William Coombs, a hard-working, industrious citizen, and was always respected by all who know him. He was industrious, moral and honest in his dealings and no work of harm could be said of him. Lizzie was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Bowman and a grand-niece of ex-Repres!
entative Jack Bowman and was a very sociable lady.
Following is Mr. Coombs' confession as given to and remembered by Marshall William: I, (S. D. Williams) helped carry Mr. Coombs and his wife in the house; was at his bedside most of the time until he died. He told me he thought he was justifiable in doing what he had done and that he was not sorry for it, for no one knew what he had gone through with, and that Robert Taylor was the cause of it all. He said Lizzie had gone over to her aunt Martha Nicholas'; he went after her and they came home. He told her if she would live with him he would never give her a cross word and she said she would never live with him again. He picked up the gun (a double barreled shot-gun). She ran out and he followed, overtook and shot her and then himself. He said she had taken $20. out of his pocket the night before and after she came back said she gave it to her Aunt Martha to keep. I asked him why he did not let her go. He said he had tried to but could not; that he loved her better!
than his life and finally said if it was to do over again he believed he would take his boy and leave her.
[The Republican Leader, January 10, 1896] - Walter Coombs, aged 27 years, who lives in Little York, shot his wife, Lizzie, at 10 a.m. Monday morning, with a double-barrel shot gun, inflicting a wound from which she died in fifteen minutes. He then turned the weapon upon himself and shot himself, the load entering his body just below the heart. He lived thirty-six hours, and begged the physicians to kill him. He died Tuesday evening. Mrs. Coombs was shot in the stomach. They had been married about eight years, and have two children who were at school at the time of the tragedy. Jealousy is said to be the cause of the fearful deed which has so terribly wrought up the community. Mrs. Combs was a daughter of Mrs. George Bowman, of Jeffersonville, and was well respected and well thought of. Our Little York correspondent gives other particulars.
[The Republican Leader, January 10, 1896, Little York Items] - A sad affair took place here last Monday. Walter Combs, a resident of our town, shot and killed his wife and then killed himself. It seemed that they had some trouble and taking down his gun told her he was going to kill her. She ran out of the house and he followed her with the gun in his hand; she went a few rods and then turning around to see if he was following her, when he fired, striking her in the left side, killing her almost instantly. He then shot himself, the load entering his body near the heart. He died, Tuesday, at midnight.
[The Democratic Sun, January 10, 1896] - Little York was the scene of a horrible tragedy last Monday, about noon. Walter Combs, aged 26, had the reputation of being a quiet, sober and industrious young man. His wife was a fine looking woman, aged 24, and before marriage was Elizabeth Bowman, daughter of George P. Bowman. The were married about ten years ago and had two interesting children aged six and eight years. Apparently they lived peacefully and happily, but sometime ago Mrs. Coombs admitted a boarder - a young man named Robert Taylor. To this, Combs objected and in the course of time Taylor left the Combs house and sought quarters elsewhere. But quite recently, Mrs. Combs expressed her intention of again taking him as a boarder and it is thought that this is what brought on the trouble last Monday. The two quarreled and Mrs. Combs declared she would no longer live with her husband. The latter in his mad frenzy seized a shot gun declaring that she should nev!
er live with any other man. Mrs. Combs ran and her husband pursued, overtaking her about 100 yards from the house. She fell to her knees, threw up her hands pleadingly, begging him not to kill her. He shot her through her body. The muzzle of the gun was so close that her clothing was burned. It was a ghastly wound and she died almost instantly. Combs then reversed the gun, placed the muzzle against his left breast near the heart and discharged the contents of the barrel. The shot tore open his left breast leaving a frightful rent in the region of the heart and it is said, tearing away a portion of the left lung. A large crowd soon gathered at the scene and arrived just in time to prevent Combs from completing the bloody work of cutting his own throat with his pocket knife. He was carried to the house and during the temporary absence of his attendants, the insane wretch, went to the cupboard, secured a butcher knife and was just in the act of cutting his throat when!
a citizen entered the room and prevented it. He begged for s!
omething
to end his existence and when refused would try to choke himself to death. Combs lingered between life and death until Tuesday night when he died.
[The Republican Leader, January 17, 1896, Little York Items] - Our people can hardly get over the excitement caused by the murder and suicide spoken of last week. There seems to be no doubt that Combs was insane at the time of the terrible deed. It was quite a shock to the family of both Mr. and Mrs. Combs. The two little orphans are staying with their grand-pa, William Coombs.
The William Coombs mentioned is my gr. gr. gr. grandfather. My grandmother used to talk oodles about the Coombs. I only have a picture of Rosalie Coombs, William's daughter. Leslie

Thanks for your interest and help. I have several questions.
1. Is it possible that Malachi and Ann had a son Malachi who married Clarky? Before I accept that Malachi at 79 fathered a son, I want to explore this possiblity.
2. I can't find Malachi and Clarky in any census. Have you? I think they should appear in the 1830 Washington County census if Malachi 1829 was born there, but I can't find them so far.
3. Is this the same Clarky of this marriage record from Indiana Marriages Through 1850 online at Indiana State Library website? MCCOY, CLARKY m STOUT,JOHN Washington Co., IN 2-10-1831
4. George Wylie McCoy named his first son James c 1847 and second son Frances Malachi c 1849. Do you know if either Malachi 1829 or 1755 ever went by another name that might help me find him in the census?
5. Do you know where any of these McCoys are buried?
6. Have you contacted the Washington County genealogical society for information? They have a remarkable library with many family files.
7. All of those posting information on the net for Malachi 1829 have the exact same information, listing children's names. These are different from those given in the census. For example, Rachel A. born 1851, is listed in the census as Rachel A. or R.A. But all the posters on the net list her as Adeline b 1854. (She married Clark Reynolds, in my husband's line.) It looks like everyone is using a common source. Do you have any clues who or what that source is? Is there a family Bible?

I have no proof but let put this into the pot and see if you think it might work.
Malachi McCoy b. 1755 d. 1829 had two (2) wives, first one (1) was Ann Lassel b ? d. 1810 and had five (5) children.
Milachi second wife was Clarky Maudin b. 1795 d. ? she had 10 children by him and her last was Milichi Jr. b. 1829.
Clarky Maudin would of been between 15 and 35 when Milichi Sr. was married to her. And 35 when Malachi Jr. was born. ??
Milichi McCoy and Ann Lassel were my Great Grand Parents though Catharine McCoy. Since I am still working on the line I have no proof of ths except I know Catharine McCoy married Thomas Peed in Lawrence County Indiana after they moved out of Washington County in 1820.

All genealogies I can find posted show Malachi b 1829 to be the son of Malachi McCoy b between 1750-1755 or so and Clarky. This means Malachi Sr. was over 70 when son Malachi was born. Possible, I think, but not probable. I found Malachi living next to (George) Wylie in 1850, in Driftwood Twp. Jackson Co in 1860, and Brownstown, Jackson Co., in 1870. Can't find a Jackson Co. death record or burial for him in Brownstown Twp.
Does anyone have evidence of the relationship of Malachi 1829 to Malachi 1755? Could Malachi be the son of someone else?

Are you descended from the William Walter Coombs who shot his wife Sarah Elizabeth Bowman or related on the Bowman side?
Don
