I am hoping to find someone that can help me locate the death/burial of
William Holstine b. abt 1810 in VA.
The 1880 census in Monroe Twp., Washington Co., IN reveals he was divorced
from his wife Mary (b. abt 1818 in VA).
Does this Holstine family sound familiar to anyone?
Thanks!

thanks for the information. Please see my other post in this thread on the Stephens in this part of Indiana.
I was not aware of these details about Thomas and Rachel. Do you know where in Tennessee they were married? Or where the Newland family is from?
Rachel is living with Richard C. Stephens in 1860. I suspect Thomas and Rachel are related, but I am not sure who Richard's parents are. I would suspect one of the others in Orange county in 1820 from my other post.

I just revisited Jacob in 1860, Orange county, and he has a different wife - Martha.
However, your Jacob was in Washington county in 1860, which matches another of my mysteries. Elias Stephens is the father of the 2 children living with James' daughter-in-law's family. Elias is listed in Cincinnati, Hamilton county, OH in every census. However, he joined the Civil War in Indiana and stated that he was living in Washington Twp, Washington county. I can find NO reason for him to be here - especially since his father John joined the war in Cincinnati and his siblings also stayed in Cincinnati. But then again, he is living in Cincinnati in 1880 with a new wife while his children are hundreds of miles away with another family.
There are only 2 Stephens families in Washington county in 1860 - Haydin Stephens and George Stephens. Neither fits into my earlier post. They most likely came from Harrison county, IN - there are many Stephens there.

Charlie, I have absolutely NONE of that except my two Jacob Stephen(s) being in Washington County. In all the years I have been doing geneaology, I have never been able to match them up with anyone except the McCrary's in Indiana and some Stephen(s) in Clark County, IL. I know that the younger Jacob was born in Clark County, IL because it was on his Civil War pension papers he had to fill out and also in his obituary. ALl of the census records state that his father-the older Jacob-was born in Germany. Also, the original name was Stephen. An "S" was added sometimes and on occasion it was spelled "Stevens". The "S" at the end was kept after World War I. Like a lot of people at that time, they did not want to be identified as being part German. I am certanly going to look into all of your names. I really hope some of these names are mine. Thanks for the info. FYI My last name is Cox!

Martin and Nancy are definitely related to each other
I meant:
James(the younger) and Nancy are definitely related to each other
Nancy and Polly are listed on the probate record for James' death along with James' wife and children.

Here is what I have found so far. In 1820, Paoli, Orange county, Indiana there is a Henry, Jacob and Mary Stephens living next door to each other(3 households) and Thomas is at the top of that page. I suspect that all 4 of these families are related. Also in Paoli in 1820 is a William Lee. In Lawrence county, there is a James Stephens.
In 1820, a William Lee marries Nancy Stephens in Lawrence county, IN. In 1821 a James Stephens(younger than the one in the census) marries Susannah Davis, also in Lawrence county.
In 1830, Jacob and Thomas are in Lawrence county, IN, Mary is in Washington county, and there is also a George and Benjamin in Washington county(not sure if George and Benjamin are related). William and Nancy Lee are in Paoli, Orange county. James, the younger, is in Martin county. I have not found James, the elder, or henry in 1830.
In 1840, there is a James(the younger), Richard C.(not Thomas' son, but of the same name), T.W. and William Stephens in Martin county, IN. Richard and Thomas are living next door to one another. In Washington county, there is a Elum and Jacob Stephens, and Benjamin Stephenson(as he is known from now on). In Lawrence county, there is an Abner, Larkin, Isaac, Jesse, and Thomas Stephens. These 5 brothers are from Claiborn county, TN(1830 census). Larkin goes to Georgia by 1850, Jesse goes to Missouri by 1850. William and Nancy Lee have moved to Boone county, IN.
In 1850, Jacob moves to Washington county, IN. James, the younger, dies before 1850. Richard and Thomas W. stay in Martin county. Abner, Isaac, and Thomas stay in Lawrence county. William is missing. Jacob, Richard, and Thomas are all listed as born in TN.
In 1860, Jacob Jr. and other children are in Orange county, IN. I thought Jacob Sr. died, but he may have gone to Illinois per the previous post. But some of the children's names seem to change during this move so it could be a different family. All other Stephens stay where they are.
Martin and Nancy are definitely related to each other along with a Polly, who married David Hays in 1828 Martin county, then married Samuel Dooley in Boone county about 1838. Samuel and Polly move to Minnesota on a land grant in the 1850's.
I am interested in James, the younger, and his son Martin Stephens of Martin county and Knox county, IN in 1870. they are somehow related to a John Stephens(b. 1810 Indiana) in Cincinnati in 1850. In 1880, two of John's grandchildren are living with Martin's in-laws(I think Martin had passed away by then) in Knox county, IN. They are listed as nephew and niece.
does any of this match with what you have?
thanks,
Charlie

I am hoping to locate someone familiar with the family of Samuel Mahorney
and hopefully locate his parents.
In 1850 he is living in Brown Twp., Washington Co., IN (Page 258) with
Thomas M. Nicholson age 33, Mary Nicholson age 32, Benjamin F. Nicholson age 12,
Samuel C. or E. Nicholson age 10, Martha E. Nicholson age 8, Thomas O.
Nicholson age 4 and Andrew Nicholson age 1. Samuel Mahorney is age 14 born KY. All
others born in IN. Also on the census is Leanha? Purcell age 14.
I did locate the marriage of Thomas M. Nicholson to Mary Ann Mehorney on 1
June 1837 in Putnam Co., IN.
So . . . is Samuel an illegimate child b. about 1835-1836 . . . or is he
Mary Ann's younger brother. She was born about 1818.
Samuel married Mary Ann Hand. I can not locate him on the 1860 census.
In 1870 he and his family were in Jefferson Twp., Washington Co., IN.
Mahorney, Sam 52 Farmer by KY
Mary 35 b. IN
Owen A. or S. 5 b. IN
James 3 b. IN
Sister Hettie 10 b. IN
By 1880 the family is in Steele Twp., Daviess Co., IN:
Mahorney, Samuel 43 by KY (parents b. KY)
Mary 33 b. IN
Owen A. 13 b. IN
James B. 12 b. IN
Pauline 10 b. IN
Eldora 9 b. IN
Nancy J. 6 b. IN
I can not locate the family after this. I am tracing from Eldora that
married Charles Dyer 1 Sept 1895 in Knox Co., IN.
Any assistance on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Jacob Stephen(s)-my ggggrandfather-was born in Germany (somewhere, someplace unknown). His wife was Susannah (?) and a son Jacob Stephen(s)is my gggranfather. He was born in Clark County, IL. He married my gggrandmother-Charlotte Temple McCrary-in 1860 in Washington County, IN. The McCrarys and Stephen(s) kept going back and forth between those two counties for some strange reason. In 1870 Jacob and Chatlotte went to Mo and lived in three or four places before settling in Morgan, Camden, or Miller Counties. Charlotte died in 1923 and is buried in Eldon, Mo (Miller County) and Jacob died in 1928 and is also buried in Eldon. There first survivng child was Joseph Daniel Stephen(s)and was my ggrandfather and the father of my grandmother-Ida Luella Stephen(s). If you think we might have a connection, I can give you more information.

BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA
I am posting my info through out different states and counties in hopes that this name has surfaced elsewhere. If anyone out there has any knowledge of this name I would love to hear about it and suggestions are welcome.
I am looking for any info on my GGgrandfather whose, I believe due to the info that I have found and has been sent to me, last name is BEDTHIJA. His son, my Ggrandfather Charles Bedthija Smith, was born in Indiana and died in Illinois and Charles daughter-Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, my grandmother, was born in Illinois and died in Illinois. I believe his last name is BEDTHIJA and that he came from Germany and possibly returned to Germany. I am listing all info, and a couple of stories, that I have on his child/children. I have nothing on him. It seems that my Ggrandfather-Charles was kept at a distance with his grandchildren, my mother and aunt does not remember much about him and they were not allowed to visit him even though he lived within visiting range. My mother and aunt said that there mother-Zetta was never told anything about her grandparents-Charles parents. So whats the Hush-Hush all about?
1st Story:
My sister remembers our grandmother, Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, telling her about a grandfather, she does not remember if she specified which grandfather, that came from Germany married a Native American (this part I question but she swears that is how she remembers the story) had child/children wife died and the grandfather not being able to speak much English returned to Germany.
Marriage Record in Vermillion Co., Indiana:
Book 7 page 119 list groom-BERTHIJA, Chalres (exact spelling probably a typo) bride-HURST, Minnie A. date-April 5, 1896. (If this is correct they probably lied on the 1900 census about being married 8 years)
Book 7 page 49 list groom-STURM, Harry (probably Minnies first husband and probably Ross (Ross from 1900 census) father) bride-HURST, Minnie A. date-none listed.
1900 U.S. Federal Census, Edgar Co., IL:
Line 24/BEDTHIJA, Charles/Head/W M/b. Oct. 1873/age 26/married 8yrs/birth pl. Indiana/fathers birth pl. Germany/mothers birth pl. Ohio.
Line 25/BEDTHIJA, Minnie/Wife/W F/b. Mar. 1875/age 25/married 8yrs/birth pl. Illinois/fathers birth pl. Illinois/mothers birth pl. Illinois.
Line 26/BEDTHIJA, Ross/Son/W M/b. Feb. 1893/age 7/birth pl. Illinois/fathers birth pl. Indiana/mothers birth pl. Illinois.
Line 27/BEDTHIJA, Jack/Son/W M/b. Feb. 1897/age 3/birth pl. Illinois/fathers birth pl. Indiana/mothers birth pl. Illinois.
Line 28/BEDTHIJA, Zeta/Daughter/W F/b. Jan. 1899/age 1/birth pl. Illinois/fathers birth pl. Indiana/mothers birth pl. Illinois.
Changes name to SMITH after 1900 census. (or was using his middle name as last name in 1900 census)
2nd Story:
My aunt remembered her mother, Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, my grandmother, telling her that when she was a little girl one day the mailman was questioning her parents about the name/names on the mail and when her parents explained to the mailman he said Just change your name.
Divorced after 1900 Census. (I am assuming that he is divorced before he signed the WWI Draft even though it doesnt ask for marital statis he states his closest living is his daughter not spouse.)
WWI Draft Registration Card:
Signed-Charles Bedthija Smith on Sept. 12, 1918 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Residence-Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana. Birth Date-Oct. 10, 1873, Closest living relative-Zetta York in Edgar Co., Illinois.
The only other BEDTHIJA that I have found:
WWI Draft Registration Card:
Allen Co., Indiana is Henry J BEDTHIJA, born Feb. 3 1895 in Scotland, Illinois (Edgar Co.) Single with no next of kin and states that he has no one solely dependent on him.
Death Certificate:
Name-Charles Bedthija Smith
Place of Death-Paris Hospital, Edgar Co. Illinois
Date of Death-May 9, 1944
Birth Date-Oct. 12, 1870(this date is different from the 1900 Census and the WWI Draft, not sure which is correct)
Father & Mother-unknown
Informant-Jack Smith
Place of Burial-Mt. Carmel, Brouiletts Creek Twp., Edgar Co. Illinois
It has been suggested to me that this name could possibly be Latvian spelled Bettija. Any info surrounding this name would be appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read my query and an enormous THANK YOU to everyone at Rootsweb for helping me find the info that I have.
Thanks,
Lori
