Message Board Post:
I recently came across perplexing information while tracing a branch of my family. I have
discovered a Wilson St. Clair living with the presumably widowed wife of Douglas
Sinclair/St. Clair in Harrison Twp, Daviess County, Indiana.
Mary Belcher St. Clair and two of her children, Nancy and James are living with Wilson St.
Clair, age 75 (approx birth year 1794), and just around the corner from my great-great
grandfather Ransom Sinclair/St. Clair, who was Douglas' brother. Douglas and Mary were
on the 1860 census in Harrison Twp, Daviess Co, but Douglas is gone in 1870, presumed to
be dead at this point (subject to change of course).
The only information that I have found to date on Wilson, is an 1836 marriage between
Wilson Sinclair and Elizabeth Evans in Vigo County. There is another Sinclair marriage in
1834 in Vigo County between Mary Sinclair and Milton Evans.
According to certain family trees submitted online, Mary was the daughter of Ely Sinclair
born in Delware in 1794. The History of Vigo County probably published sometime in the
late 1880s has a biography for Mary's son, Mathias Smock that claims Mary's father
was still alive at the age of 96 years old.
I am trying to find out who Wilson actually was and how he ties into my family.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!
