Message Board Post:
I have a bible that needs a home. Hoping to find someone in the family who wants it.
Unfortunately, there isn't much to go on. The bible was part of an antique
dealer's estate. She was from Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. She obtained the
bible prior to 1946, probably from an estate sale. The bible is most likely from Indiana
or Illinois, possibly from an estate near Terre Haute or Indianapolis.
The bible was originally owned by Susan Davis. The front piece of the bible says
"Presented to Mrs. Susan Davis by William Davis, her son, March 19, 1881."
That's all. There is no family history or register of births, deaths, and marriages
inside.
In the middle of the book, someone has left some pressed leaves in onionskin paper. At
the end of the book are a few pages to insert family photos. There are three pictures
here. Two tintypes--one of a woman and one of a man. There is also a 2 œ X 4 inch card
photo of a younger man standing in a studio, who looks very much like the man in the
tintype. Since the tintype is probably older, the young man could be the son of the older
man. On the back of the card photo is printed "A.B. Miller, photographist, 43 œ E.
Washington St., Indianapolis, negatives retained." Also in this section are four
locks of hair-three blonde and one brown.
The title of the bible is "Peabody's New National Combination Chronological,
Analytical, Historical, and Pictorial Holy Bible," published by Alvin Peabody, No. 18
E. 4th Street, Dayton, Ohio.
There is no publication date on this book, but there is a copy of this particular bible in
the Dayton Metro Library and the catalog gives the publication date as 1870.
If you think this Susan Davis and her son William Davis are a part of your family, please
contact me at tamszion(a)yahoo.com.
