Can some one tell me if Chapter 86 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks
still meet and where I can write for records of past members? A newspaper article , The
Terre Haute Star, from 1951 stated that there was an " Old Boys" group in this
chapter and Ralph Lott Conover was a member. These were the oldest native sons of Vigo
County. Ralph was a son of William and Catherine Warth Conover. They came to Terre Haute
in 1856 from Cincinnati, Ohio but William Conover was born in 1816 in Cranbury, Middlesex
County, New Jersey. Two brothers of William were Vigo County residents. Ralph R. Conover,
born in 1811/1812 in Middlesex Co., NJ and married to Ellen/ Elnore Snedeker. They arrived
in Vigo County about 1839 and Samuel S. Conover and wife Sarah Frances Weeks came in 1856.
Samuel and Sarah Frances returned to NJ after 1870 and are buried in Rahway,NJ where they
had previously lived and where he was a blacksmith. Ralph R. and William Conover are
buried togethe!
r in Terre Haute. Pearl Conover, son of Ralph Lott Conover and Anna Lottie Smith Conover
was Chief of Detectives for many years. I am trying to find the correct set of parents
for William, Ralph R. and Samuel S. Conover who were probably born in New Jersey about
1790. Thank you. Marie Reedy
