I will send you the whole paper that was written by Florence Hull Riehle in 1958. She took
some liberties with quotes but the story is based on facts. I have to retype it in order
to send it. The copy I have is not very good but legible. As soon as I get it on y
computer I will send it. One paragraph specifically mentions Ann and Alec.
"Sarah and Isaac Woollen's daughter Ann had announced to her parents before they
left North Carolina, "I will marry the first man who asks me when we reach your
promised land". History shows that she did. Alec Gren was a good enough man but
somewhat backwoodsy - not Ann's equal by any means. But here was a chance for him to
get a cook and a helper. Housekeeping in those days was not of prime importance, and Alec
thought a wife might help in th field and perhaps chop the wood. That wa the life cut out
for sprightly Ann!
There were several marriages between the Woollens and Robertsons and both families left
North Carolina for Indiana. Isaac's sister Sarah married John Robertson (b. 1775). I
am not sure the Alec and Ann story is your Ann and Alec but there are a lot of
simularities. I also have a great Aunt Anna who married a Robertson. She was the
sister-in-law of my grandfather Hugh Robertson, who was son of Hugh Robertson, who was son
of John Woollen Robertson, who was son of John (1775) and Sarah Woollen Robertson.
I will send the article this week.
Kay
