Can someone help me prove or disprove if Jefferson Davis Williams was born in Vigo county,
IN.? In the 1880 census for Hart County, KY., it states he was born in KY. but I have been
told also that he was born in Terre Haute, Vigo, IN. Could someone look for a birth record
for Jeff or maybe a tax record for Calvin J. Williams in Vigo County for 1871 - 1873?
Thank you.
Descendants of Calvin J Williams
Generation No. 1
1. Calvin J2 Williams (Williams1) was born Abt. 1829 in Kentucky, and died Bef. 1887.
He married Amelia Page Abt. 1849 in Kentucky, daughter of Unk. Page. She was born Abt.
1832 in Kentucky, and died 16 Oct 1916 in St. Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri.
Children of Calvin Williams and Amelia Page are:
2 i. William Henry3 Williams, born Nov 1849 in Hart County, Kentucky.
3 ii. Sarah Payne Williams, born 16 Jun 1854 in Hart County, Kentucky.
4 iii. Rose Ann Williams, born 21 Dec 1856 in Hart County, Kentucky.
5 iv. Joanna Williams, born Sep 1859 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana; died Bef.
1870.
6 v. Joseph T. Williams, born Sep 1859 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana; died Bef.
1870.
7 vi. John J. Williams, born 23 Dec 1866 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana; died
24 Mar 1943 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. He married Mary A. Braby 11 May
1891 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri; born Feb 1872 in Missouri.
8 vii. Ida Belle Williams, born May 1868 in Henderson County, Kentucky. She married John
J. Jones 16 May 1889 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri; born Jul 1867 in Kansas.
9 viii. Jefferson Davis Williams, born 23 May 1872 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana; died 09
Dec 1918 in University Hospital, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. He married Sophia
Grace Nussbaum 20 Jun 1900 in Atchison, Kansas; born 16 Apr 1883 in St. Joseph, Buchanan
County, Missouri; died 27 May 1933 in Havre, Hill County, Montana.
It is my belief that Calvin and Amelia were both born,
raised and married in Hart County, Kentucky near Horse Cave. After searching the 1840 and
1850 census' for both Williams and Page families I have only been able to establish 1
family for each surname.
For Calvin, I suspect that a Garlan Alexander Williams
and his wife Mary are his parents. Calvin has stated that his father was born in Virginia
and in the 1850 census; Garlan claims to have been born in Virginia. However, in the 1850
census, the two oldest children at home are also shown to have been born in Tennessee and
the remaining 7 to be born in Kentucky, this could indicate that Calvin was born in Tenn.
and not Kentucky and would require further research.
For Amelia, I suspect that a William and Mary Page are
her parents. The 5 children still at home in 1850 are all born in Kentucky and the oldest
is Albert who is about 4 years younger than Amelia. In the Hart County, KY birth records
for 1854, there are 3 Page's listed; Elizabeth married to Ezeckiel Smith giving birth
in Nov.; Albert, is a father to an illegitimate child born to Elizabeth Crump in May; and
Amelia is giving birth to Sarah Payne in June.
I further believe that Calvin and Amelia moved to New
Albany, Indiana after 1856 and before 1860 as I have found them there in the 1860 Federal
Census with 2 additional children, Joanna and Joseph, twins, born in September 1859.
Calvin is also listed in the New Albany directories for the years 1859 and 1860.
Prior to 1863, it appears that Calvin and Amelia have
moved again. This time I think they may have traveled by boat to Evansville, Indiana where
John was born in December 1866, according to John's death certificate. John's
younger sister, Ida Belle, was born in 1868 in Kentucky according to the 1870 census and
as stated above, I have a copy of a lease agreement for Calvin, his brother Elijah and his
oldest son William, leasing bottom land along the river to raise crops.
Between 1868 and 1871 I cannot find anything about the
family or where they were but according to information on Jefferson Davis Williams, they
must have moved to Terre Haute in Vigo County, Indiana for a time as Jefferson is said to
have been born in Terre Haute per a Michael Lacopo, a veterinarian in Indiana and
Williams/Nussbaum researcher. I am troubled by this claim because I cannot visualize the
family moving from Henderson, Kentucky north to Terre Haute and then in the 1880 Federal
Census they are back in Hart County, Kentucky.
Sometime after 1880 and it seems 1882, the family has
moved again. This time they have made their way to St. Joseph, Buchanan County, MO. John
J. Williams's death certificate states he has been a resident of St, Joe for 71 years,
this would put the family there in 1882. I have found directory records of the family in
St. Joe as early as 1887, at which time Amelia is shown to be a widow. Unless I can find
records of the family between 1882 and 1887 in St. Joe, I cannot tell you if Calvin made
it there or died during the trip.
