Hello-
I'm posting this in hopes that it will help break down someone's brick wall in
Indiana.
Several years ago I discovered 2 HENDRY children living with my ALLEN family in 1850
& 1860 in Edgar Co, IL. I've spent much time trying to determine who these
children were and why they called my William Allen their "uncle". Their names:
Samuel b. ca 1843 & Henrietta b. ca. 1840. Their birthplace was given as Roseville,
Indiana.
Recently I traveled to Parke Co, IN, shuffled through the big, old books and climbed to
the top of the ladder in the courthouse in Rockville, IN. There I found the 1847
guardianship records awarding the children to Wm. Allen of Edgar Co, IL. Though no
relationship was given, I discovered the following which could be very valuable to some
HENDRY/HENDREY/HENDERY/HENDRIE researcher, so I'm passing on my findings:
Parke Co IN
Bond Record for Guardians 1832-1858, pg 42-43
24 Apr 1847-Awarded to George Row: guardian for Henrietta Hendery, Martha Hendery &
Samuel Hendery, heirs of William Hendery, deceased.
13 Sept 1847-Awarded to William Allen: guardian for Martha Hendery, infant, heir of
William Hendery, deceased. (No spouse given for William Allen.)
14 Sept 1847-Awarded to William Allen: guardian for Samuel Hendery & Henrietta
Hendery, heirs of William Hendery, deceased.
Further research revealed that:
William Hendry was the son of Moses Hendery.
William was named as administrator to his father's estate, but Wm. died before
Moses' estate was finally settled in 1847.
Further family data on Moses Hendery/Hendry gleaned from Petition to Sell Real Estate for
minor grandchildren.
-died in 1839 in a storm in Natchez on the Mississippi
-spouse named Leche/Seche
-daughter Jane m. Wm. Stone, son of Lewis--Wm Stone died by 1847 leaving the following
children: Sarah Jane, Martha Ann, Cloetea Caroline, Nancy Catharine, & Isaac Wiseman
Stone. It would appear that Moses intended to provide for these fatherless children with
land, but didn't express it in writing before his death. Moses' widow, Leche,
testifies that she knew he intended for that to be so and that she gave $50 to their
mother, Jane with that intention.
-son, William m. ?? (maybe an Allen or Barnes). Both William & his spouse died before
1847 leaving the following children: Henrietta, Samuel & Martha
-son, Moses, Jr.
-daughter, Mahala m. George Rowe -- Martha, Henrietta & Samuel were first placed with
this family, but the judge overturned guardianship and wards were placed with William
Allen . (I have yet to find a relationship between these children & Wm Allen)
Moses Hendry/Hendery had the following siblings:
bro Isaac Hendry
bro John Hendry
sis Nancy m. Thomas Patton
sis Martha (unmarried in 1847)
My research on these Hendry children who were wards of William Allen reveal that:
Samuel m. Rebecca Allen, dau of Francis C. Allen in Edgar Co IL & settled in
Pottawatomie Co OK where they died in their 90's. (Rebecca is a niece of Wm Allen of
Edgar Co.)
Henrietta m. John LaFollett in Edgar Co IL and she died young
Martha m. Lot Thomas in Edgar Co....she was raised "an Allen", whereas the older
children were "Hendrys".
I hope this is helpful to someone.
