I had not heard of the Tribe of Ishmael - and I cannot access the footnotes
from the website link - perhaps the numbers correspond to the book by Hugo
P. Leaming that is listed before the map.
Wikipedia has an interesting article re Leaming:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben-Ishmael_Tribe
The writer states Leaming was (quote) discredited by Nathaniel Deutsch in
the book Inventing America¹s Worst Family: Eugenics, Islam and the Fall and
Rise of the Tribe of Ishmael.(end-quote)
An excellent history on some tri-racial families in Indiana is:
Southern Seed, Northern Soil: African-American Farm Communities in the
Midwest, 1765-1900, by Steven A. Vincent, c.1999, published by Indiana
University Press.
Vincent focuses on the Beech, Roberts, and Lost Creek settlements. A few
additional surnames to Beech and Roberts are Bass, Chavis, Brooks, Byrd,
Davis, Harris, Hill, James, Jeffries, Keemer, Locklear, Matthews, Newsom,
Scott, Tootle, Walden, Watkins, Winburn, and Winslow.
