CENSUS OF 1835, TERRE HAUTE (Vigo County), INDIANA
Abstracted by James M. Freed, Delaware, Ohio
jmfreed(a)midohio.net
Abstracted from "When Terre Haute was Young", a series of articles
written by A. R. Markle, and published in the Terre Haute Tribune. The
1835 Terre Haute census (NOTE ONLY Terre Haute, not the entire Vigo
County) was included in Vol. 1, containing articles originally written
and published in the newspaper in 1931-1933.
Over a period of several weeks in 1932, A. R. Markle published a list
of the inhabitants in Terre Haute, Indiana (Vigo County), identified
as the "Census of 1835". These inhabitants were listed as residents
"living on the inlots and the outlots." He continues, that the list
contains, "the names of the heads of families, the number of males
over 10 years of age, the number of males under 10 years, the number
of females over 10 and the number of females under 10 in the case of
white people and the number of males and number of females in the case
of negroes. Where the head of the family was negro, the name of the
head was given." A microfilm copy of the "booklet" made from the
articles is available in the Vigo County Public Library. No
information is provided as to the location of the original or copies
of this 1835 census.
Markle stated that the 1835 Terre Haute Census was taken by Charles T.
Noble. "In preparation for legislation to incorporate the town of
Terre Haute, he [Noble] made a personal canvass of the town in 1829
and listed each head of a family within its boundaries, giving also
the number included in the family by sex. This effort at organization
failed, but in 1835, he made another census of the inhabitants, giving
the added information as to two divisions of the ages of each sex and
the number of free negroes and their sex." At the conclusion of the
series of articles, Markle states, "The total population given in this
census of 1835 was made up of 182 families, 641 males, 512 females and
47 free negroes."
Abstracted below is a list of inhabitants as given by Markle. Markle
did not alphabetize the list because he was sharing the list as
provided by the census taker, which presumably listed neighbors
together. Markle states that "Noble adds no explanatory note to
account for the absence of so many of the names of those who were at
the time and in later days so prominent in the business life of the
infant community and whose names did not appear in his list because
not being heads of families they were enumerated under the head of the
family where they boarded."
For most (but not all) of the names below, additional information is
available as to the ages of some of the individuals living with them
and Markle quite often makes comments about the families (some
comments based on cemetery records or other records available to him
in 1932). Markle added all "maiden" names appearing below in
parentheses. The abstractor added the parentheses. Readers of this
Vigo County list, who wish more information about specific families,
please ask ON the Vigo County Rootsweb Discussion List and provide the
page and column number and the surname, and I'll respond on the list
for the long-term value for the genealogists interested in the 1835
inhabitants of Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. The page number is
the page number in the booklet entitled, "When Terre Haute Was Young",
which appears to be a "pasting" together of the newspaper articles
(still in column format) into a booklet and that also appears (from
the microfilm copy) to be a one-time publication, and may never have
been officially reprinted and published. Note that some names shared
below were not on the actual census, or in fact some individuals were
not living at the time of the census, but Markle added some names for
explanatory purposes, including, for example, maiden names of the
wives, or names of children who were later prominent or known by
Markle. Wherever "negroes" are listed, I've listed them separately,
whether listed separately and named as "free negroes", or listed them
(not named) with families when listed as such, with other residents of
Terre Haute.
