Jim,
I have 2 families that were there about that time--Hogue and Ray. I looked
at the LDS Library Catalog and it was not there. Guess it has not
circulated much. I would love copies of any of these families mentioned and
am ready with my check book.
Please let me know the address of Markle or anyone I need to contact.
Thanks for this post.

Subject: [INVIGO] 1835 and 1829 Censuses of Terre Haute, Indiana
When we were in the Vigo County Public Library, Terre Haute, IN, this
past summer, we found, on microfilm, a booklet entitled, "When Terre
Haute was Young", which is subtitled, "A series of articles from the
Terre Haute Tribune" by A. R. Markle. In Vol. 1, in a series of
articles from 1931-33, Markle shares the 1835 census of Terre Haute.
This was not a federal or a state census, but a census taken by
Charles T. Noble. "In preparation for legislation to incorporate the
town of Terre Haute, he made a personal canvass of the town in 1829
and listed each head of a family within its boundaries, giving also
the number included in the family by sex. This effort at organization
failed, but in 1835, he made another census of the inhabitants, giving
the added information as to two divisions of the ages of each sex and
the number of free negroes and their sex."
Two questions:
1. Does anybody know if the above mentioned 1829 census is available?
2. Is the 1835 Terre Haute census available online? (I searched the
archives of this list and I could find no comments about it.) If not,
I can prepare a list of the names, and readers can write for further
information. Not only does Markle share the census, but for some
families, provides additional comments from his own memories or
records.
