WELL KNOWN CITIZEN IS CALLED BY DEATH
Hugo DUENWEG Passes Away At Home Of Daughter At Miami, Fla - Active In Local Affairs
Hugo DUENWEG, 82 year-old pioneer citizen and business man of Terre Haute, died in Miami,
Fla. early Thursday morning, following an attack of pleurisy which developed while he was
enroute to Florida, from his home here. Mr. DUENWEG and his wife left a week ago Tuesday
to visit their daughter, Mrs. E. C. WYETH.
Word of the death came unexpectedly, as Mr. DUENWEG was in unnaturally good health
considering his advanced age. Mr. DUENWEG had not been active in business or civic
affairs for about 10 years and had planned to spend some time in Florida.
Mr. DUENWEG was born in Bursheidt, Germany [I believe this should be
"Burscheid"], which is located in the Ruhr valley, but he left the native
country at the age of 15 and came to Terre Haute to join his brothers. He was the
youngest of five children [records indicate he was actually the OLDEST of the five], all
of whom located in Terre Haute. He had been in this country only a short time when he
volunteered with the union forces. He enlisted in the 32nd infantry and served under
Generals Grant, Hooker, Sherman, and many others in the south.
Was Active in Politics
After a discharge from the service, he returned to Terre Haute and was employed in the
internal revenue office for several years. He was then elected city treasurer, which
office he held for three consecutive terms. Later, he as a candidate for the office of
county treasurer, but, was defeated.
He was an ardent republican, and his political career was also marked by a race for the
office of mayor in which he lost to J. C. KOLSEM, the democratic candidate.
For some time, Mr. DUENWEG was not active in politics, but engaged in the hardware
business with the firm of FINKBINER & DUENWEG. He was also employed in the old
Shannon bank and was interested in several other businesses in the city. About ten years
ago he retired and has lived in the family home at 1314 South Seventh street. He was
interested in all civic movements and took an active part. He was a member of the Masons
and the G.A.R. It is believed that he was the last survivor of the Thirty-second Indiana
infantry.
He was married to Anna SEEBURGER, daughter of Louis SEEBURGER, another pioneer family of
the city, and there are six children. Besides the widow, the children who survive him are
Mrs. Dan RUSH, of Chicago; Mrs. WYETH, of Florida; Paul DUENWEG, of Houston, Tex.; Julia
DUENWEG, supervisor of drawing in the city schools; Anita DUENWEG, teacher at McLean, and
Walter DUENWEG. There are several other relatives in the city.
The body will be brought to Terre Haute, arriving about Tuesday. Arrangements for the
funeral services have not been made.
