We are searching for any records of a female with the last name of
McCabe, born about 1826, probably in Vigo County, Indiana, or Clark
County, Illinois. She was the daughter of James B. McCabe and his
first wife, Rebecca (Cowen) McCabe. James and Rebecca were married
March 15, 1825, Clark County, Illinois. At that time, Rebecca was
probably living with her brother Joel Cowen, in Clark County, after
her father (James Cowen) had died in 1816 in Knox/Sullivan County,
Indiana. James B. McCabe's parents, Armstrong and Eleanor (Barrett)
McCabe lived in Vigo County, Indiana, across the state line from Clark
County, Illinois.
When Rebecca divorced James in 1829, in Vigo County, Indiana, she
indicated that they had two daughters. We know that one daughter was
Sarah Jane McCabe who much later married Hiram Pitt Bennet and they
moved to Colorado. However, this Sarah Jane McCabe was indentured in
1833 to Richard Blake of Vigo County, Indiana and her mother's name
was listed as Rebecca Allison. By 1833, Rebecca had married Joseph
J. Allison in Vigo County, and had a son, George M. Allison.
Because of the indenture of Sarah Jane McCabe in 1833, we suspect that
Rebecca's husband may have died, because the indenture did not mention
any husband of Rebecca's. Her son, George M. Allison, may have been
raised by another family as well, but no record of his indenture or
guardianship has been found.
We have NOT found any indenture for the McCabe daughter, born ca 1826.
Was she adopted by another family? Was she indentured and kept her
McCabe name? Did she die after 1829? We have not checked the
cemetery records for Vigo County, Harrison township ( Terre Haute
area, where Rebecca lived in 1833), for either a ____ McCabe or for
her second husband, Joseph J. Allison.
Any help on this matter would be appreciated. If this unnamed McCabe
daughter did survive and marry and have descendants, we are anxious to
contact them.
