The Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home on 7th was originally owned by the Ryan family
who is no longer in the funeral business. The Frank M. Ryan family at one
time lived there. It may have been the Frank M. Ryan Funeral home back then.
Frank was born about 1900. It later became known as Patrick J. Ryan Funeral
Home named for his son, Patrick, who continued the business.
Frank's father and Patrick's grandfather was also a Frank M. Ryan born about
1860. He is listed on the 1910 Census as living on Walnut and being in the
undertaking business. His parents were from Ireland and he was born in
Indiana. I imagine the Patrick who received the Medal of Honor was this
Frank's father or grandfather. Many of the family members are buried at
Calvary Cemetery which is across the street from Highland Lawn. They were
Catholic and attended St. Patrick's Church, at least in the 1940's and 50's.
I am not sure if any of this will connect with John but hope it helps a
little with the funeral home questions.
