CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIED THURSDAY NIGHT
J.J. Chapman Was One of the Best Known G.A.R Veterans in the City.
J.J. Chapman, aged 66 years, died at his home, 127 North Third Street, Thursday night of
lagrippe of the bowels. He was born at Philadelphia in 1833, and served three years in
the Civil war. He was in the Twenty-second Kansas Cavalry, under McCloude. Mr. Chapman
leaves a wife and two children, Mrs. Ida Waltman of Evansville and Miss May Bird Chapman
of Terre Haute. He also leaves a brother, Charles Chapman of Mount Carmel, Ill.
Mr. Chapman was one of the best known GAR veterans in the city, and during the last
campaign was in charge of the Republican headquarters on south Fifth street.
