Claudia & Ellen,
It looks like there is enough of a possibility of an
Owenslager/Oelenschlager/Onslager connection for us that we should keep
digging.
The Onschlager I put in my Vigo surname rollcall is Eva Katherine b. Dec 10,
1825 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. I have seen her surname recorded a number
of different ways. She married Peter Jacob May 23, 1850 in Germany & they
are my gg-gm & gf. They came to the U.S. abt. 1857, were in the 1860 Clay
Co. census and then Vigo Co. after that. The info on Eva Katherine's death
cert. indicates her father is George Onschlager; no entry for her mother. I
suspect that George may have come to the U.S. also, but have not been able
to find him yet.
The Civil War pension file for Peter indicated he & Eva Katherine were
married in what appeared to be Reinbach, Germany. I found this town [near
Cologne], but it is not in Hesse-Darmstadt. I looked at Reinbach church
records with no success. Claudia, your info that your line is from Rimbach,
Germany makes a tremendous amount of sense and potentially helps clear up
this mystery for me [Rimbach could easily have been written to look like
Reinbach]!! There is a Rimbach in Hesse-Darmstadt, just south of Frankfurt.
Some thoughts/suggestions:
1. We take this discussion off the Vigo list to email, including anybody
else on the list who would like to participate.
2. Search the Rimbach church records through LDS films.
3. We look at the record book for the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terre
Haute. About a year ago, by chance, I found this in the Vigo Co. Public
Library: Kirchenbuch der deutschen evangelish-lutherischen Gemeinde U.A,.C,
1858-1880. My Jacob/Jacobs family had a number of entries. I did not have to
time to look for Onslager, etc.
Any other thoughts, etc?

Claudia, this is very interesting. Barbara SMITH was born in
Hesse-Darmstadt
(according to census info) and her parents Alfred Smith (possibly
Schmidt
I
wonder?) and Mary Owenslager also were from Germany. Unfortunately,
other
than
their names on Barbara's death certificate, I have yet to locate
Alfred
and/or
Mary on any census or other legal document. I know that Barbara lived
in
both
Marshall, IL and Terre Haute, IN at various times in her life. I
wonder
if
my Mary could be related to your family. I know Barbara was
supposedly
born
about 1842 in Hesse-Darmstadt and married Benjamin KNOWLTON in Clark
Co.,
IL in
1858. This certainly gives me something to think about and look
into!
