From everything I have read, and from my WPA records, the requirement for
providing parents' names in marriage records did begin in 1882. It was just
not well complied with until much later. From 1882 on, it's worth ordering
a copy to find out. Prior to that date, it's probably a waste of money.
The description of certain records can be so misleading; when telling people
what records I have for lookups, I hesitate to use the description that came
with the records. For instance, my Birth Index claims to have birth records
from 1850 to 1920; there may be one birth from 1850, but we all know
recording births in Indiana didn't start until 1882? And, these records say
they "have been extracted from the records compiled by the Indiana Works
Projects Administration in 1942" so I would hesitate to call my Vital
Records Indexes "WPA" records. I don't know that it's the complete WPA
record. I try to make it clear to people when I provide a lookup, that just
because it's not in my index certainly doesn't mean the record doesn't
exist. Maybe others have more complete records, mine are Family Quest's
Indiana Vital Records: Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes.

I thought I might mention that I did find out who my
GGrandmother's
parents
were from an 1882 marriage record. So I guess some documents can
contain
more
information. My GGrandmother was thought by family to be an orphan
with
parents unknown!!
Sometimes we find a nice surprise,
