HARRY WAYLAND
'BUD' HERBERT[PARA]Harry Wayland "Bud" Herbert, 88, of Polanddied at 9
p.m.
Thursday, November 20, 2003, at Cloverleaf Healthcare in
Knightsville.[NL]Born Aug. 24, 1915, in Cunot, Owen County, Ind., he was
the son of Albert Henry (1882 - 1961) and Iva M. (Knoll) Herbert (1881 -
1971.) As a little boy, he delivered bottled milk with his little red wagon
in the town of Cloverdale, and graduated from High School there in
1933.[NL]His hobby in electronics found him taking a three-month course at
Coyne Radio & Electric in Chicago in 1936. He was an employee of the
Cloverdale Hardware, with a radio repair shop on the mezzanine floor of the
store.[NL]He entered the Army in June 1941. During WWII, he was a
communication chief in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge in November
1945, he opened "Herb's Radio Repair" shop in Broad Ripple, on the north
side of Indianapolis. In 1949 he went back to Chicago to learn TV repair on
the GI Bill for $2,000 at De Forrest Radio. [NL]On Nov. 28, 1953, he was
united in marriage with Betty Marie Little (who survives), at the
Indianapolis home of his sister, Lois. He moved his business and bride to
6357 Guilford Ave., Indianapolis. In September, 1964, they bought property
in Poland. After closing his business in February ,1966, he worked for Duo
Fast of Indiana for two years and four months. The couple moved to Poland
in July, 1968.[NL]He loved cats. He trained the ones that stayed with them
in Broad Ripple to open a door, which he built, and enter the garage for
their food and drink.[NL]Retiring from the work-a-day world, "Bud" took on
the role of volunteerism with the Poland Volunteer Fire Department, helping
his not-so-young neighbors and doing what he could to help at the Poland
Historical Chapel. He was a 50-year Mason and a member of Clay Lodge 85, F.
& A.M., Bowling Green. He enjoyed working on remodeling his home, in the
yard, garden, and relaxing with friends at square and round dancing.[NL]In
the fall of 1991, after the town of Poland celebrated their Sequential
Centennial, "Bud" had a tumor removed from his brain. This slowed down the
outside activities but he still enjoyed his computer. He had taught himself
basic programming in 1982 and continued to enjoy his computer till he went
to the hospital with pneumonia on the 3 rd of September. He entered
Cloverleaf Healthcare on Oct.9.[NL]His sister, Lois De Moine Nees, preceded
him in death on Aug. 28, 2002, and his nephew, Earl P. Nees on Nov.1,
1995.[NL]In addition to his wife, Betty, he is survived by his sister, Lois
Gray of La Porte, Ind., two nieces, one nephew and grandnieces and nephews.
[NL]At the request of the deceased, his body will be cremated with the
