Message Board Post:
Hello Vigo County researchers,
I hope someone can help me look for a family that might have been around Helt twp,
Vermillion County or Terre Haute, Vigo County. I have a Mary Etta Anderson, born about
1843 in Wood Co., VA to parents Edward and Elizabeth (STAATS) ANDERSON. I have found two
Mary Paytons, both born about 1841. One is the wife of William or W.O. Payton, and one is
married to Edward Payton. I have looked at the 1880 and 1900 U.S. census and can't
determine if either one is mine.
According to oral legend and a short bio, Edward & Elizabeth Anderson arrived in
Vermillion Co., IN in the early 1850s, so I think the birth places from the census might
be incorrect. Or neither one is my Mary Etta Anderson.
Mary Etta Anderson Payton is mentioned in a biography about Nelson C. Anderson:
Provided by John Hollingsworth and transcribed by Pollee Kreaps:
History of Vermillion County - 1888
Biographical Sketches
Pages 337 and 338
NELSON C. ANDERSON, one of Vermillion county's most active and enterprising business
men, was born in Wood County, West Virginia, the date of his birth being August 13, 1837.
He is the ninth in a family of ten children of Edward and Elizabeth (Statts) Anderson,
both of his parents being natives of Wood County, West Virginia. They came with their five
youngest children to Vermillion County, Indiana and made their home near Clinton in 1853,
where the father bought a tract of 160 acres. He did not live long in his new home, his
death occuring in September, 1855, at the age of sixty-seven years, his widow surviving
him until 1859. Their children are as follows: Michael still living in Wood County,
Virginia being sixty-seven years old July 10, 1887; John came to Vermillion County a few
years after his parents had settled here and is now living in Helt Township; Samuel and
Peter died in West Virginia; Mrs. Sarah Smith died in Vermillion County; Mrs. Eliza Hupp,
Mrs. Rebecca Sparks and Elijah also died in this county; Nelson C. the subject of this
sketch, and Mrs. Margaret Payton living in Helt Township."
This bio is the only place I have found her referred to as Margaret, vs. Mary Etta. Also,
she is referred to as living in Helt twp, Vermillion Co. and in the 1880 census Mary E.
Payton is in Terre Haute. Maybe with all these discrepancies she isn't mine. I have
been looking for months for her and I am asking now for a fresh look at this from anyone
who has time to make new suggestions to me as to where to look for my Mary Etta/Margaret
Anderson Payton.
I also found a Mary Etta Anderson who married Lewis Thomas, 19 Feb 1893, Bk. 6, p. 516 in
Vermillion County. This wouldn't seem to be mine because she was already married to a
Payton by then according to the bio. But, again, I don't know. Odds are that the
family was in Helt twp., Vermillion county, but since many other parts of the Anderson,
Smith, Hupp, Staats, Barnhart, Stark, etc. family ends up in Terre Haute, I thought I
would ask here, too. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you,
Laura
