William L. Mcpeak, 78 year old, Jan 4, 1939, well known retired businessman, civil and
fraternal leader died at the Union Hospital Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock. He had
been in falling health for the past several years.
Born in Tennessee, Mcpeak came to Terre Haute but a young man and for over 40 years was
the proprietor of the Mcpeak restaurant at Wabash Ave. He retired in 1931. A member of
Terra Haute Lodge No 86 and of the "old Boys" organization of the Elke and
member of the K of P lodge and several civic clubs and organizations. Mcpeak during his
active career was a well known Terre Haute and Vigo county citizen. Surviving are the
wife, Mrs. Harriet Mcpeak, two sons, Leslie and Robert: a sister, Mrs. Laura Jenkins
Peoria Illinois, and two brothers, Ernest Mcpeak Pimento, and John Mcpeak Canton Ohio.
Mcpeak's restaurant was one of the landmarks. It was patronized by Terre Hauteans for
over 40 years. Will and John took their turns before the range and the place became noted
throughout this section for such dishes as fried chicken, oyster dishes, backed beans and
pies. It was a meeting place and the name was widely known.
Will Mcpeak was prominent as a sportsman. He owned some swift harness horses off and on,
and his exploits in the field and with prize pointers and settlers were notable.
None of these things, however, were permitted to detract from the matters at the
restaurant, and his chief pride was in the type and portions of food put out by Mcpepak. A
couple of generations of citizens now and then took their sustenance with W. L. Mcpeak.
Burial in the Highland Lawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Harriet Frances Mcpeak died unexpectedly about noon Tues at her residence Feb. 24,
1954. She was the widow of William L. Mcpeak, local restaurateur.
Mrs. Mcpeak suffered a stroke and fell in her dining room. Neighbors, who were unable to
rouse her, called her son Robert J. Mcpeak, local attorney. He went to the residence found
his mother had died. Besides the son, survivors are one other son, Leslie C. Mcpeak,
Sydney Australia, Four sisters Misses Nellie and Anna Chamberlain, Mrs. Bertha Humel and
Mrs. Mildred Smith and one brother Charles C. Chamberlain. All of Terre Haute.
