I was bored--it's cold outside so I am at the computer--so I decided to do a little
research on your question. What is so interesting is that as I looked for the family and
followed them, as best I could, I found them in 1880 living in Frontier Co., Nebraska in
the same neighborhood as a family that I am researching, Jacob Surber (spelled Serber in
that census). How strange!
1880 District 9, Frontier Co., Nebraska
Temple Smith 39, IN
Martha A. 32 IN
Chase? J. 13 IA (female)
Dora Bell 9 KS
Emma B. 7 IA
Chas. F. 5 IA
Elzora 4 IA
Alzina 3 Morsourie I am assuming this is Missouri!
James E. 2/12 Nebraska
Not sure if this will be any help, but I found a John Scott, 46, b. TN in Morgan Co.,
Indiana in 1850. He has a daughter, Martha, age 5--not an exact match for the age of your
Martha, but ages vary in the census records.
1850 Clay, Morgan Co., Indiana
John Scott 46 TN
Polly 36 OH
Amanda 19 all children b. IN
Elina 13
Harriett 11
Winfield 9
Martha 5
Melina 4
Albert 1
F. M. Cunningham 17
It appears to me that Polly is possibly a second marriage for John Scott.
I did not find this family in the 1860 census.
Of interest are some marriages that I located:
John Scott and Margaret Cunningham Oct 29, 1833 (this is of interest because of F.
M. Cunningham living with the family in 1850)
John James Scott and Mary Jane Pettyjohn Jan 2, 1845 in Clark or Orange Co., Indiana
John Scott and Mary Osmen Oct 27, 1846, Wells Co., IN
John Scott and Mary Graham Jan 15, 1835, Putnam Co., IN
John Scott and Mary Abrell, Apr 25, 1839, Owen Co., Indiana
(Of course we know that Polly is a nickname for Mary.)
In 1840 there is a John Scott in Vigo Co., IN

There is also a John Scott 20-30 with no children living in Owen Co., IN. This would
possibly be the John Scott who married Mary Abrell in 1839 in Owen Co., IN.
The first John Scott in Morgan County appears to be the same one as the John Scott in
the 1850 census with the daughter, Martha. There is one female 10-15 that is not
accounted for by the family members listed in 1850, but she could easily be a hired girl
or a female relative living with the family.
I don't know if this will help you or not.
