Jerry what a delightful "hope". My Kadel line in Vigo carries the name
Eva Katherine for a few generations. Your family could have a tie in.
This is great. I agree, we can use our own emails, so anyone else
interested let us know. I've noticed their are a few Oehlenschlager
obits listed at the Vigo Library. I will send for them, I just haven't
attended to that end of the line, but I'm ready now.
I have only taken one step into the water to jump oversee to do
reasearch. I went to the LDS Library in Salt Lake a few months ago and
looked up some films, but of course they were all in German. I only
had one day and it was not enough. I have yet to send for the films
and view them at the FHC here in Fresno. I to have found the name
Oehlenschlager spelled many different ways. I have settled for the
long version because of the marriage record I found on Johann Adam
Kadel and Anna Margaretha Oehlenschlager.
This is great. We will keep in touch. My email is
claudiaboggs(a)comcast.net, hope to here from you soon.
I can't find any census record with my Kadel line in Vigo until 1870
but a number of their marriage records indicate being married in Vigo
County. I think I will branch out a little and check Clay Co. Census.
I'v been under the impression they just avoided the Census that year.
I'm aware of the the Lutheran German book in the Library. Are you
close enough to go their and research? Can copies be made of the
book. My George Kadel was the Secretary for the church for many years.
I would assume the records for the family would be complete. Do you
know someone that can read German and do translation. I would be
interested in finding someone to do research on my Kadel line. This
would be baptism/Christened dates and possible leads on family ties in
Germany.
The names of my Kadel family are:
Johanna Adam Kadel
Anna Margaretha Oehlenschlager
Mary (Marie) Sophia Kadel married Louis Hoffman
Margaretha Kadel married William Fuhr
George John Kadel married Marie Janda
Eva Katherine (a) Kadel married Nicholas John Kadel
Wilhelm (William) G. Kadel married Margaretta Dorner
Katherina Kadel marrie Rev. O.S. Zimmerman
Phillip Kadel married Antjirt (Anna) Zimmerman (O.S. and Anna were
related)
William Michael Kadel married Susan E. Stitt, 2nd Edith Kadel their
child Ruth was my grandmother.
I'v got to run, we'll talk soon :)

Claudia & Ellen,
It looks like there is enough of a possibility of an
Owenslager/Oelenschlager/Onslager connection for us that we should
keepdigging.
The Onschlager I put in my Vigo surname rollcall is Eva Katherine
b. Dec 10,
1825 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. I have seen her surname recorded
a number
of different ways. She married Peter Jacob May 23, 1850 in Germany
& they
are my gg-gm & gf. They came to the U.S. abt. 1857, were in the
1860 Clay
Co. census and then Vigo Co. after that. The info on Eva
Katherine's death
cert. indicates her father is George Onschlager; no entry for her
mother. I
suspect that George may have come to the U.S. also, but have not
been able
to find him yet.
The Civil War pension file for Peter indicated he & Eva Katherine were
married in what appeared to be Reinbach, Germany. I found this
town [near
Cologne], but it is not in Hesse-Darmstadt. I looked at Reinbach
churchrecords with no success. Claudia, your info that your line
is from Rimbach,
Germany makes a tremendous amount of sense and potentially helps
clear up
this mystery for me [Rimbach could easily have been written to
look like
Reinbach]!! There is a Rimbach in Hesse-Darmstadt, just south of
Frankfurt.
Some thoughts/suggestions:
1. We take this discussion off the Vigo list to email, including
anybodyelse on the list who would like to participate.
2. Search the Rimbach church records through LDS films.
3. We look at the record book for the Immanuel Lutheran Church in
TerreHaute. About a year ago, by chance, I found this in the Vigo
Co. Public
Library: Kirchenbuch der deutschen evangelish-lutherischen
Gemeinde U.A,.C,
1858-1880. My Jacob/Jacobs family had a number of entries. I did
not have to
time to look for Onslager, etc.
Any other thoughts, etc?
