Is this Hiram McDaniel the son of Aaron and Mary (Fields) McDaniel? I have a Hyram listed as their son born in 1834 but no other info.

Also, consider the possibility that Martha Ann's father's name was not John.
That could be a middle name or alternate name. If I recall correctly, your
only source of his name was Martha's death certificate, and those are
certainly not infallible sources.

If it were me, I would study those folks where you found what could be the
Scott sisters. I have the same problem with my gg grandmother Rebecca Ann
Graves in Clay Co., IN. She and her brothers and sisters were living in several
households around Brazil in the 1850 census. Even if the mother was alive,
the County would parcel out her minor kids to other folks as guardian. That way,
the County didn't have to pay anything for their support.

Was there a State Census for Vigo Co
that was taken in 1855, 1865? My Martha
Ann Scott not found in 1850 or 1860 with
a father name John. Found 3 Scott girls
living with other families in the 1850/60
census but No Martha. Thanks for your
reply to my question.
You probably need to check the County Clerk's office and look at not only
Probate records but deeds. Most children were placed with guardian's when the
father died. Sometimes even when they had a mother willing to care for them. I
found one of my lost boys in the County Poor House in the 1870 census for
Monroe Co., IN.

Thanks for that information Mary I
appreciate everyone's help/
I found a Nancy Scott -13- with a Parsons family, a Lucinda Scott -12-
with a
George & Nancy Wood and an Anna
11/12 with a Harvey & Mary Scott possibly
an older brother and wife or perhaps an
Aunt & Uncle. Possibly siblings of Martha
Ann Scott, my ancestor? Will do more
checking they were in 1850 Harrison Twp
Vigo Co IN census record.
I found a place on line that has 1850/60
census records for Terra Haute found these two entries Harrison Twp:
Nancy Scott -13-
household of Joseph Parsons, wife Maria
with children Nebra and Joseph.
Lucinda Scott -12- IN w/ George & Nancy
Wood
Harvey Scott, w/ spouse Mary
Anna age 11/12
possibly an Aunt & Uncle???
possibly 3 of Marthas' siblings? Will do
further research and investigation of this.
I am so sorry!
I don't have access to Ancestry any more. I have a habit of reading
everything I find on an area I am researching in and ran across that several
years ago when I decided to go page by page thru one of the census years.
Why don't you try the page Random Acts of Kindness..

I am sure someone there will help you.

Do you think you could find me the 1850/
60 census of that place and send to me
in seperate e-mail as JPeg or Plain
Text to my e-mail above. I found some
things on the IN Genweb page but nothing
about censuses for them.

There are a lot of them. Go to Google.com and type in 'Rose Orphan Home, Terre Haute, IN'

Coleen, I have a book about Terre Haute that says Chauncey Rose opened the Rose Orphan Home in 1884. It was originally called Vigo County Orphan Home until the Board of Directors changed it.
That's way too late for your time frame. But, assuming he opened it because there was no place for Orphans in Vigo Co, I wonder if you might search articles about the Rose Orphan Home to see if any of them mention where orphans were sent before the home opened.

Subject: [INVIGO] Question
Was there an orphanage in 1850 in the
Vigo Co IN area? If so did it have its own
census taken and if so was it microfilmed
and available to the general public for
viewing?
Looking for my Martha Ann Scott born
abt 1847/8 Terra Haute Vigo Co IN.
Possibly could have been or may have
been orphaned early and placed in this
orphanage.
Thanks so much for your help. Coleen

Father: John born IN/PA this according to

Unknown if she had any siblings. Perhaps
if I checked the 1850/60 census for other than
Martha perhaps. Patsy, Patty, Mattie, or her
middle name Ann I might find her. Thanks so
much for your help with this riddle.
