I recently received a obit for Mary Etta (Murphy) Hirschfield from Vigo county-- in it it says that she has a sister Mrs. William Berry of Terre Haute. Seeking info of "Mrs. William Berry or an Iona Berry?" I'm trying to place her in Mary Etta's family, but can't seem to find who she was. I have found an Iona/Ione Berry on the 1920-1930 Vigo Co census, wife of Wilber Graham Berry--- 1930 census shows a son "Frank" (might be adopted). Does anyone know of a Iona/Ione Berry or Mrs. Wm Berry that live in Vigo County after 1830 census? Thanks, Kathy Bargerhuff

Message Board Post:
thank you! that really does help a bit. and it makes a little bit more sense now - although I'd really like to know more about why they got married and why they got annulled or divorced and how long...
Now, I have Roy's birthday as September 19th, 1899. and the 1930 census I have has his wife, Melvin and their children, Nadine (10) Maxine (8) Roy Jr. (7) & Beverly (4) and it also has Roy's age at "first marriage" as 18 - meaning his first marriage would have been in 1917. and it has Melvin's age at first marriage also as 18 and she was born in 1901 - meaning she and Roy would have been married in 1919.
the marriage date I have for Roy Searing & Laura L. Sweazey...(which by the way, just now looking through all my stuff I found a Laura LETITIA Searing listed with parents Joseph C. & Nettie Palmer born in 1901), as December 25th 1917. So Laura would have been 16 years old - which in Indiana it's not legal to marry until you're 18 - so yes, she'd have been underage, however Roy would have been 18.
The thing is, too that if Roy & Melvin married in 1919 it would have to had to have been between January & June of 1919 being that the census I have is April of 1930 and if Nadine was 10 - that means she was born anywhere in late 1919 or early 1920 - and let's say at the LATEST (unfortunately I don't have my great-aunt's birthdays or months...) - but let's say at the LATEST she was born in March or April of 1920 - that means Melvin would have had to have gotten pregnant in either June or July of 1919 - but that's assuming the latest possible birthhday...
and so, unless Melvin actually got pregnant BEFORE she & Roy Married, (which I find unlikely being that I know Nadine actually had a shotgun marriage once Roy Sr. found out she was pregnant he marched her down to the jail where her boyfriend was and demanded they get married before the baby was born...)
But they, Melvin & Roy would have had to have been married at least in the first 6 months of 1919.
So Laura & Roy were married on Christmas in 1917 - they got it either annulled or divorced anywhere between 12/26/1917 and the end of 1918...
this is just blowing my mind...and again, unfortunately there's NO body in my family that i can ask, as my mom couldn't even talk to her aunt's (nadine, beverly, or maxine) if she wanted to since we honestly don't even know where they live or if they ARE alive...and her father, Roy Jr. died in 1990 and my grandmother died in 2004.
anyways - not sure you got through all that...lol - but again thank you very much for your input, and if anyone else DOES have any information it's all greatly appreciated.
I would appreciate it if someone could look up some names for me at the
Praireton Cemetery. The names are Charles W. ADAMS, Alice Anna, his wife. Also
if there are any other Adams buried there.
Thanks so much, Carol

Not related, just trying to help. From what I can find she appears to be the daughter of Charles and Nettie Sweazey and his wife Nettie. In the 1910 census they lived in Vermillion county, Clinton township, Dist 117, sheet 4A, and she is listed as Latisha, 8 years old. The ink is very faded so will have to take the indexer's word for this. In the 1920 census she is back with her family, same parents, in the same township, Dist 90, sheet 4B, now listed as Laura, 18, and single. I would assume they eloped to get married and when they came back home, the families had it annuled as they were both underage. As an aside, in the 1920 census Roy's family consisted of him, his wife Melvin and mother Laura, no children. Hope this helps. Don
